McCuddly you are doing way beyond what a lot of his so called friends are prepared to do in supporting him, this must be a huge strain on you and your OH.
Have you had a chance to speak to the MH service workers for advice? Would your friend perhaps put them in contact with you if they aren't already as you are clearly a real source of support for him at this very difficult time.
Is there a local MIND group in your area? Even if your friend doesn't want to link with them you might find they have useful information and advice which might help you to deal with the issues your friend is having problems with.
Really wish there was more help I could give, this is a very difficult situation for all of you. Big HUGZZZZ0
