Now that seems a good technique, but just want to go home after nearly 8 hours of driving... will try that one..If the world is a stage... I want better lighting!0 -
The US has definitely got better highway regulations than we have. Speed limits are strictly enforced, so most people observe them. On freeways, you pass on either side, just set your cruise control (which most cars have) to the speed limit and motor along. On open road, you may only be doing 55, but you hardly ever catch up with vehicles or get overtaken. Of course, when you hit a 6 lane traffic jam, that's another story altogether!

OP, if the inside lane was empty for miles as you say, why were you in the middle lane at all, what were you overtaking?
it is not undertaking for lane 1 (or 2) to be going faster than lane 2 (or 3)0 -

What amuses me is the pedantic driver who must be in the left hand lane although he is wanting to go faster than the average speed of the traffic, mainly, lorries in that lane. You are in the middle lane going faster than the lorries and the outside lane is totally empty but they come up behind you hooting and flashing. Has no effect of course and after several minutes of apoplexy ( I'm doing 70 anyway) they pull into the outside lane with bad grace . They then pull into the very left lane for 100 yards when they are up the !!!! of the next lorry so pull out , pass it and back into the inside lane again. You see them disappear into the distance in-out-in-out . I call them the Hokey Cokey drivers. As big a menace as anyone because they not only risk wiping themselves out but are breaking the highway code which recommends smooth consistent driving. You scullion! You rampallian! You fustilarian! I’ll tickle your catastrophe (Henry IV part 2)0
