Hi, sorry to just butt in on a very interesting convo. i have just had my renewal pack which i have filled in but also received another letter re. my income 2010-2011. I was living with my partner and he was workin when i gave them this estimate and according to this letter they are also using that as my income for 2011-2012. Unfortunately my partner and i split up but then got back together jan this year but he had been laid off since oct 2011. My est income for 2011-2012 is now only £1920 as supposed to the £8500 from the previous year. If i ring and tell them will they owe me money and will the tax credits i have been getting this year be wrong due to A LOT less income than estimated. Thanks :)
Did you tell them when you split? It's something you must tell them about and your joint claim will end and you have to open a new single claim. If you split, got back together, and never told them it's probably far too late now, you'll just have to declare joint income.

Has anyone had an amount of ctc withheld? Last year they withheld over £1000 until they could verify my income for the year (ending April 2012). When I asked them about this they said they would make a decision at the end of the year, so I was expecting this sum to be released to me upon renewal. But my new payments are the same as last year, and no info about the the money they 'withheld'.
Can anyone explain what should be happening? I'll ring them on Monday but I'm not always convinced about the info they give me, so it'd be good if someone has had experience of this and can tell me what to expect?
    Thanks everyone.
Are payments exactly the same? If so they've probably not processed the renewal yet.

    Hi
Wondered if anyone can answer my question?........
I gave a rough figure of 12,000 for my 2011-2012 income however
my actual pay was 14,500 ish.
Will I now be in debt to ax credits for £2,500?
    Thanks
  • Can anyone help please? we have just recieved our annual tax credits renewal and because my wife has earnings showing £28K on her P60 but her salary is only £19K and the rest is made up of a Season Ticket Loan the HMRC are going to take away over £100 a week from our child tax credits. My wife pays this loan monthly out of her salary but the HMRC do not want to accept this and are still stopping our tax credits. I myself am registered disabled and have no taxable income.

We have all the evidence from my wifes employer: wage slips, P11d and a letter from her company's payroll department to corroborate what we have told the HMRC.

What else can I do to get the tax credits at HMRC right?

Just an update. Phoned HMRC on Monday, Tuesday and finally got through on Wednesday. They were waiting for confirmation of a figure from me from last year's P11D, which I'd just received. They then confirmed that my 2011/12 entitlement to CTC would be recalculated and finalised. This will release the 'withheld' amount. I'm still sceptical about getting it without further struggle, but at least they're saying I'm entitled to it, or some of it. I'll post when I get it!
They also reworked my 2012/13 entitlement based on known actuals, not last year's taxable income (I'm now unemployed). So I'll get a bit more every week.
I do think their renewals process is inadequate. But then most of the benefits system is set up to stop people like me getting money in case I either find work and don't tell them, or am telling lies. Neither case would ever occur, as like most people, I'm honest, principled and just want to be off benefits and back at work.

  • Hello everyone, I hope someone can answer my question.
My husband is self employed, homeowner working 40 hrs(down from 44hrs) We do not have any children. Our income for 2010/11 was £6800. I have since lost my income and our total for 2011/12 reduced to £3600. HMRC's renewal letter says we are no longer entitled to tax credits and all our payments have stopped. They also say we owe them £1300 in overpayments. Can this be correct? This means we will loose our home and only have £43 a week to live on. Neither of us receive any other benefits and we have used all our savings since I lost my job.
I had just decided to apply for a college course to help increase my employability chances, but after receiving this letter I dont know which way to turn now.
  • Hi, can anyone tell me if i now owe money to tax credits...
i have changed job a couple of times this year and have claimed and stopped claiming working tax credits as when was necessary. I have now received my reviews and renewals forms and although i estimated my total income would be £17,000 for the tax year i now find it is in fact only £9,940 including 2 short periods of job seekers and ESA both of which were contribution based. A question on one of the forms has me concerned as it asks ... ''you stated that you expected to earn £17,000... but now you have worked it out was it less than £13,035 if so contact us now... ??? I fear the worst !
    Any advice much appreciated

No, 41% of £2500 max. But might be no overpayment at all, depends on your 2010/11 income as there's a disregard for income increases of £10k

Why is it showing as £28k on the P60 if £9k of it's a loan? Think you need to ask your employer why they're taxing a loan! If it's interest free then the interest the employer is forsaking might be a taxable benefit, but not the loan itself.
