Where Can I Buy A Goat
Comments

Oxfam have put a limit on the number of goats they sell this year. This is because there has been some concern about their use in unsuitable locations (where they could denude the vegetation). So it has been decided to sell alpacas as an alternative.Chas wrote:Have you tried Goats R Us?
I hope this thread isn't a wind up just to artificially inflate the demand/price of goats as the 'must have' thing for Christmas? What part of "A whop bop-a-lu a whop bam boo" don't you understand?0 -
So ..... goats are going to be much harder to come by, but there should be shedloads of alpacas?
note to self: stock up on goats0 -
There again there is only going to a limited number of Alpacas. Once they are sold, no more will be available. As to putting a limit on them, we have a certain number gift cards (which are actually fridge magnets) for each item. Once they have gone we won't be able to order any more. I think this only applies to animals. Other things, such as books, fishing nets and school desks have no limits on them.Chas wrote:So ..... goats are going to be much harder to come by, but there should be shedloads of alpacas?

alwaysbusyMUM wrote:or similar, a very good friend was bought a goat last Christmas by her neice, the goat lives in some poor country and was purchased by the neice for the family that now own it, to use for milk etc. I have been trying to find a well know site to do the same or something similar for those in the family that have everything already & don't need anymore stuff.
Any suggestions would be grateful, I know it didnt cost a lot either.
Thanks in advance.
My mum used oxfam unwrapped for her wedding list last year. This included goats, cows, toilets, classroom, clean water, bogs, training midwives, training to be a bee keeper.
A great idea I though as she has everything she needs!Skint- Gall

I have just purchased 200 tree seedlings and a course of deworming tablets from World Vision instead of the bulk distribution of christmas cards. DS and I will make homemade personal ones for family only. On the World Vision site they state that if certain gifts are oversubscribed they will use the money within the target community other essentials (like clean water etc).I like to live in cloud cuckoo land :hello:0

Have just got out the cards I have as presents and tried one out. Didn't realise they are also fridge magnets as it doesn't say anywhere on them. Anyway, it stuck to the fridge OK0 -

Thanks everyone I can't believe the response I got.
I have now made my purchases from World Vision, and bought everything from Netball kits to a goat.0 -
re: sponsoring children - oxfam unwrapped do lots of other gifts as well as goats, I seem to remember from last year, you could pay for a 100 school dinners for a child, (for only £6!) or buy a school desk and chair, or school kits for children (satchels with coloured pencils etc) that would really benefit a childs life in a developing country.
As oxfam are an established and well regarded charity you can be as sure as possible that your money/gofts are being directed to places where they will be well used and sustainable (eg. they put in basic training in goatkeeping for the family adopting a goat, including in using the manure to fertilize veg crops, help them with rearing and breeding the animal, and passing the kid onto another family in need)0
