maybe you could get one down the pub?

Huh? Although I did once buy a chicken in a pub car park  Nothing dodgy about it though. Had to catch this chicken though, as it had escaped from it's box and was flapping around the boot!

I work in an Oxfam shop and these gifts have proved very popular over the last year or so. Starting at £5 you can buy 2 school text books right up to £50 for a donkey. There are bigger gifts available for a group of people or a company to buy. One gift we sell is a toilet for £30. The people who buy these usually say they are buying them for their son-in-law or their brother-in-law. I wonder why this is !

I bought 25 trees as part of my Grandad's 90th b'day pressie (11t Nov) and he was so pleased. It wasn't buying for the sake of buying and lets face it what he hasn't got at 90 he probably doesn't need! I added on chocolates at the end of the order to be delivered to him direct. It also give you the option to have "do not open til *****" on the envelope of the card which tells them of the gift and you can put in a personal message. I used the oxfam site.

I can't seem to find chickens anymore - I keep chickens myself, which is why I would particularly want one :)QUOTE]

If you are buying one of these items and you are an income-tax payer, don't forget to fill in the Gift-Aid form. When you do that the charity will be able to claim 28 pence in the pound back from the government. So that's extra added value on your gift.

I love these type of gifts and normally when asked by family and friends what i what i ask them to look on one of these types of websites and pick something from there. My sister paid for immunisations and school books for my birthday, and they where two of the best pressies i have ever recieved. Christmas is the perfect time to do something like this, a great reminder of the bigger world picture.

I agree. It's nice to have some "surprise" presents but also good to give something that will hopefully actually get to where it is needed.

If everyone in the UK gave one of these alternative presents, there would be.....?????..... er um well....a lot of alternative presents going to needy causes.

In fact trying to ship 60,000,000 goats would be something to see lol

Have you tried Goats R Us?

I hope this thread isn't a wind up just to artificially inflate the demand/price of goats as the 'must have' thing for Christmas?
