Marybishop - I have noticed a BIG difference since eating ground linseeds every day and my digestion really suffers if I don't. I don't think chewing is adequate because they are so hard.

You can also soak them but I find they go all slimey.

Heating them destroys the goodness because the oils in them are very fragile.
  • On Womans Hour on Monday they had a nutritionist talking about them as 'superfoods' (it may be on 'listen again') she said that the best way to take them was soaked overnight and either drink the lot or as mentioned above if you have diverticulitis just drink the liquid.

My question - I put them in my HM seeded bread, am I destroying all of the nutritional benefit?

I was told by my nutritionist that you mustn't heat them - I even think twice about putting warm milk on them when I have them with shredded wheat!

For dessert, another way I really like to eat them is to mix ground linseeds and other seeds for crunch in with natural yoghurt and a drop of honey.

Apart from having Omega 3? oils, ground linseeds work as a mini 'colon cleanse' apparently.

Don't buy them pre-ground though because like pre cut veg, they lose their goodness quickly. Sensitive little beggars!
  • Think we've got an old coffee grinder lurking at the back of the cupboard somewhere - will have to dig it out and give it a go. To think all those months of eating them with my porridge hasn't done me any good at all! Anyone found they help with dry skin - my DD who has them like me in porridge has really dry skin (maybe that explains why nothing's changed on that front!)
  • Thanks for all your speedy answers. Looks like i'm going to have to invest in a coffee grinder....even though i don't drink coffee!

Not sure about the skin thing as mine is pretty oily anyway :-(

I mainly find their benefit in terms of, how can I put this delicately,....regularity!

    No more bloating for me!!

Maybe it would be better to grind them and mix into porridge when it has cooled a little?

you can put the ground seeds on hot food and you can use the ground seeds in recipes such as an addition to bread or in muffins.
This is a very good book

I don't drink coffee either so you can imagine how pleased I am to now own a shiny hand coffee grinder that doesn't grind linseeds! Think i'm going to have to put it on ebay or use it as a present....

If anyone has Gillian McKeith's cook book, there is a lovely recipe in there for carob brownies that uses ground linseeds. Although when I made it I omitted them because I didn't have any at the time and the mixture wouldn't set. I had to eat them frozen!!
