Linseed seeds

I have a bag of linseed seeds that i found at the back of the cupboard. Any suggestions what i can use it for? They don't look too appertising but i believe they are pretty good for you.

  • I have flaxseeds and sprinkle them in soups and bolognese etc. just before the end of cooking, so perhaps you could also do this with linseeds. My main use for the flaxseeds now, is puting a couple of teaspoons in when I am making bread dough. I haven't tried linseeds but in general most of these seeds don't really affect the flavour of something in small quantities but I sprinkle them in for the health benefits

    flax seeds and linseeds are one and the same, or so i was told :S

    as to their uses.... we used them in some nutty brownies
  • FLAXSEED is another name for LINSEED.
    They are one and the same.
    If you do not grind them in a spice grinder they can pass straight through your digestive system. So do give them a whizz in a liquidiser or spice/coffee grinder to turn them into meal, that way you can benefit from their high ALA content, this turns into EPA an Omega 3 fatty acid and is very good for you, thats apart from the soluble and insoluble fibre that they are also good sources of.
    Flaxseeds

    I grind a small potful each week and sprinkle them on my cereal or porridge. They can substitute for eggs or fat when baking, you can add them to soups, stews and casseroles or use as a seasoning for veg or salads.

    thanks. I think it was reading one of your posts making a reference to linseed made me get them out of the cupboard in the first place!

    Linseed is excellent for people suffering with IBS & having to cope with a big fat bloated tummy & constipation. It's lovely when mixed in with yogurt & gives it a nice nutty texture, or it can be sprinkled on cereal.
    The bigger the bargain, the better I feel.

    I should mention that there's only one of me, don't confuse me with others of the same name.
  • Hi, I buy a seed mix for bread which contains linseed, along with sunflower, pumpkin, sesame and others. It'll be lovely in a granary loaf.

    I add them to my bread mix too.

    Lightly toast them in a dry pan, give them a bit of a smash with a pestle and motar and chuck 'em in your BM. Delicious AND good for you!

  • Linseeds are very good for you, but very...er...moving. Don't go too mad on them all at once (or don't stray too far from the bathroom!)

    That's the high insoluble & soluble fibre content having it's impact. The soluble fibre soaks up a lot of water and so it's a good idea to make sure you are drinking plenty when using linseed.

    A tablespoon of linseed meal is about 10g and the most linseed anyone would need a day would be 40g so that's 4 tablespoons max. I have one tbsp with my cereal and probably incorporate another in other cooking during the day. I have never had a problem with "urgency" but have always eaten a high fibre diet anyway so there's been no change. People who normally eat white bread or refined foods may notice a difference at first.

    I use them in bread making too, didn't know I was supposted to grind them up first though!
