As a newbie to the whole games thing, what else (apart from another controller) would I need and where are good places to buy accessories/games [for a PS2]?

Depends what kind of games you are into.
If you can gather a group of friends (not necessarily sober), I can HIGHLY recommend the "Buzz" quiz games, which work like a TV quiz show with buzzers (yes, real buzzers). There are Music, Sport and General Knowledge versions, plus I'm sure that there's a new kids one too.
Also the Eyetoy camera, and the various games for that are good too. (Using motion-detection, i.e. you looking like a prat, if anyone were to see you from outside.)
Eyetoy Kinetic is an exercise-based game using the Eyetoy, and yes, it will get you sweating.
Then there's the Singstar series of karaoke games.
Other than that, budget games to look out for (particularly eBay, or used at Game, etc.):
Gran Turismo 4 is THE BEST driving game
XIII is a great-looking (comic graphics) first-person shooter
The Grand Theft Auto series, particularly San Andreas, will keep you occupied for hours (so long as the violence doesn't offend you)
Also the massive choice of sports games (football, basketball, golf, etc.)
[Sorry if those last few are a bit too blokey for your taste.]0 -

The ps2 is kind off it's way out but that does mean that you can get lots of cheap preowned games! Gamestation in particular are great for that, I bought for excellent games for my Xbox this morning for £20!
They have a site but instore is better.
4 for £20 http://www.gamestation.co.uk/discountsearch.asp?discountID=8
2 for £20 http://www.gamestation.co.uk/discountsearch.asp?discountID=4
If you want to know which games are good, rottentomatoes.com is always useful.0 -
It was marked up as a "this weekend only" offer in my local store, but Gamestation seem to have a Premium Xbox 360, Gears of War and PES6 for £279.99.0

Picked up a 360 from Gamestation today - Best deal I've seen yet. Not sure if it's in every store, but it's certainly at our local one.
XBox 360 with:
Any 3 games of your choice! (Even brand new ones out as of yesterday, like Gears of War or Tony Hawks: Project 8)
Plus...
Another selected title! (Choose from Project Gotham 3, NinetyNine Nights, Farcry Predator, Blazing Angels.. And some others, which I've forgotten - damn!)
All for.... £339.99!!
Bear in mind that each title is £49.99, including (I think) most of the 'selected' titles on there... That's £200 worth of games, for only £50 more than the standard console price of £279.99.
Premium console as well.. Which includes the Hard Drive, Headset, HD Cables, Ethernet cables and all that jazz.
Not bad, eh.

Deal advertised on billboard Edinburgh Princes Street store was any 3 games + PGR for £449.99. The Gears of war and Pro Evo bundle "this weekend only" for £279.99.
When I went into the store there was another offer 4 named games (cant recall precisely what they were) for £339.99. My son indicated the games were fine so went to purchase. At the checkout (very helpful guy) explained that the offer was ANY 3 games + PGR and premium console for £339.99. Better still the Edinburgh store he tells me is only one of six in the UK that has the PGR + extra wireless controller included in the deal (small box set).
All in all walked out with Premium Console, Fifa 07, Gears of War Special Limited Edition Pack, Just Cause and PGR + additional wireless controller for £339.99. Hope this may assist someone in the same area who is still looking for a very good xbox 360 deal.0 -
Sorry for not adding a deal to the thread but Im definitely after an Xbox 360 at some point, sooner the better. Although I was wondering whether people think the deals will get better towards christmas?
Cheers, Shemy.0 -
Deals will be MUCH better after xmas - and possibly after the PS3 launches in the UK too (March I believe). I dont think there is going to be a major issue with stock after xmas, but maybe someone else can shed some light there!

I could be wrong, but I think the best deals could be just immediately before the release of the PS3 (March AFAIK), as a spoiler by Microsoft.0 -
Cheers guys, the sensible option would be to wait until after my exams in January, that way get a good deal and dont mess them up, but we don't always take the sensible option do we!?0
