Good question. If you're mentally strong enough to cope with the shame of losing control of your bowels every day with the associated smell and discomfort, and needing to change many times a day (no one like sitting in their own s*it) then it doesn't have to stop you working. And it didn't stop me for almost 20 years. But I struggled to keep it a secret from everyone I worked with due to the shame.

Employers get suspicious when you have to disappear to the toilet for extended periods of time many times a day, and not at convenient times.
i was only asking as i know someone who is incontinent and they have never had any major probs although they do not tell anyone

  • LOL I have sought medical help, tried everything neurology could throw at me but unfortunately I just don't seem to respond to any of the "preventer" medications. I was diagnosed when I was in school and have been under the care of a neurologist for almost 20 years now so i'm not likely to outgrow it either.
  • DMG, could you possibly clear a bit of space in your PM box please? I'm the only relative newbie that I can see here, and I want to assure you that I'm not a troll! It's difficult to do so without giving away too many of my personal details on the public forum though. I'm happy to talk to anyone who is also worried that I'm not genuine - just send me a PM, I'd rather people did that than were suspicious of me.

Sorry FleurDuLys, I didn't mean you - I was trying to be cryptic but I can see that it could have been misread, didn't mean to worry or offend. ;)
    Gone ... or have I?

I can't believe people are giving you a tough time. Here you are, someone medically challenged who DOES work and contribute, which is what so many threads here are all about... if you can work, you should try, even if you are limited in what you can do. You are not letting your disability stops you and I think you are an exemple to so many too busy to find excuses not to work rather than concentrating on what it is they can do.

I'm really sorry about the disciplinary situation, really sorry. It is not your fault and the consequences seem very harsh, I can understand even more why you are looking at any way you could get money whilst you are looking for another job if it comes to that.

I think if I was in your shoes, assuming you do get the sack, which might very well not be the case, you can be disciplined for gross misconduct but only be given a written warning (make sure you prepare your statement well), I would start by trying to claim JSA. Ask to meet with a senior representative, and explain your situation, giving copies of the hearing etc... so they can see that it was your mum who messed up. The JSA can be withhold for up to 26 weeks, but doesn't have to be. I would do everything to get them to support you an show determination to find another job asap. If that doesn't work, well....yes, I would go to my GP...
  • Cheers DMG. I've had so much go wrong with my health in the past year that I wouldn't blame anyone for questioning it really! Unfortunately it's all true, I was a lot better and was just getting things together to start my new career when I got diagnosed with breast cancer on top of everything else. I intend to continue to work and study as much as I can whilst having treatment so I can get back to work as soon as I'm able, and I really like the way ESA works as it gives you a lot of support to do this :)

I'll be honest, I suffer from blackouts and I have absolutely no intention of ever claiming jobseekers allowance again (claimed for 3 weeks when I was working 8 hours and had no hope of getting more hours). The advisors are just not geared up to deal with more "unusual" problems and it was going to take them 8 weeks to get me an appointment with the disability advisor.

I got quite lucky and managed to get a transfer to a different store (same company OP, hope your meeting went well) that could offer me full time hours. If I was ever in your position I would probably claim ESA too
  • Thanks, I've never claimed anything before so I'm really worried about all of this. I got my current job when I was on notice of redundancy from my last position (took a big pay cut but the luxury of being able to go home and not worry at the end of the shift is worth it).

I just wish I knew what was going on, can't believe work are toying with me so much.

The guy who claimed to have committed suicide and has since come back as various AEs. I'm not saying who I think it is, not the OP, but there is a newbie on this thread who posts in exactly the same way that andyandflo did ... ;)

I spy with my little eye, someone begining with C.

I dont support fraud at all infact I hate it but the op has paid into the system for years and years so I for one as a long time tax payer wouldnt begrudge her a few months ESA, she doesnt intend to sit on her bum on it for ever just until she gets another job.

Huh? So it's acceptable to commit fraud if you've paid into the system?
