Hi PP, thanks for popping on and saying hello! I find it amazing to find so many like-minded people on this site, all slightly obsessed!!! It is so gratifying just to save a few extra pounds here and there and ensure no debt is creeping up. My DH and DS have nicknamed me the 'gas and electric police' as I constantly run around turning the heating off, lights off, mains switches, etc. Think they are finally getting the message, although DS does love having his laptop, TV, xbox, ipod, and freeview on all the time GRR!! Oh and as everything is on, his room gets hot and he opens the window wide open  Mmm guess 15 year olds are not the best MSE candidates!

Lol my 15 year old dd isn't the best candidate either. One day they'll get it I hope.

mummalove, could you install a light with a motion sensor on the porch at the front and back of the house? The light would then come on if the burglars (or anyone) came to the door. We got one for the back door to make it easier to see where to put the key and it was less than £30 - probably around £20 I think. The burglars would not want lights showing them standing around the door.

Oh thats horrible about your neighbours. My friend round the corner was burgled last month, they popped out her double glazing in the kitchen window stole her new I mac and then stole her huge 7 seater car. She is also now getting an alarm. It is something that I should look into really but its the cost that puts me off. I think having a dog acts as a slight deterrent as she barks if the door goes.

You can't put a price on security. I would get the alarm, and i would also do what you said and put your jewellery somewhere else too.

I saw a tip somewhere about leaving something behind the door so if they broke in it makes a racket and wakes you up.

    .

So sorry to hear about the burglaries in your area. I think burglars use windy nights as an opportunity as they can't be heard.

Apparantly in my town the new thing was burglars poking something through the letterbox to grab keys left in the hallway. I would be devastated if we were broken into.

Great tip Michelle about leaving something behind the door.

Thanks Cath, you are most probably right about the windy nights as we expect to hear noise and creaking about in the house then.

Incidentally, my friend are work today said her husband (who is in the police force) said often houses with pets are targeted. Apparantly, owners are used to hearing noises and bangs in the night from their pets and can 'overlook' any noises that may be from burglars. I would never have thought of that, but I guess it is true. Apart from, of course, if you have a dog that barked / growled out of character one night.
