Just been catching up with this thread and all of your progress! Glad your first day went asparagus, it is such a nice feeling being back in employment, being unemployed really takes away your confidence. I have been on a training course for the last few days which has been really good fun! Back in the office tomorrow and I have actually really missed being there!

I was wondering about your second interview before Stew but at least you know that there is a reason behind the wait!

I'm in exactly the same position, having taken voluntary redundancy at the same time as you. I have finally been offered a job subject to references and will start a week on Monday, but only after several failed applications and a few failed interviews. I'm happy to have secured something but the money isn't great and it's not permanent. But I definitely think it's easier to find work when you're in work, and rubbish money is still significantly better than JSA!

I think in hindsight I should have started applying for jobs much sooner than I did - I didn't really take it seriously until after I came back from a holiday after leaving my old job. It's been a real eye opener at some of the jobs I've not had interviews for - some of them I could have done with my eyes shut! But it's been great experience in learning how to fill out the application form well and in interviews, so I am positive about the whole experience, and most importantly, I still don't regret leaving my old job.

I lurk a lot on this thread and empathise so much with everyone. It's always great to hear when people get jobs and I feel so bad for those who feel they're getting nowhere. I've had to lower my expectations but there is something out there. Keep the faith :)

Thanks Joyce and congratulations on your new job :T

I actually started applying for jobs last year. I applied for the graduate programmes for Asda, Sainsburys and Waitrose. Then in January, I started applying for loads of different jobs. I didnt get an interview until April! Like you, I have no regrets...its been tricky, but I know I've made the right decision :D

I go for jobs now, and it seems I just can't win. If I get an interview, I'm often told afterwards that I have too much experience and potential for the job and that they feel I won't stay for the long term.

If you know your expected staying power is the killer, based on previous interview feedback, even if you aren't directly asked about this, do discuss it. Bring it up and pre-empt their concerns.

I know my apparent staying power is what landed me my current job - they weren't convinced I would hang around, but I stressed how much I liked the role and the company itself and that if I felt things weren't meeting my expectations, I would discuss that with my boss rather than just apply for another job. Making clear that I would have an honest conversation rather than sloping off is what swung the interview for me.

You could try that sort of tactic in your next interview?

Quick update on the job interview situation.

I spoke to the agency today, turns out that the interviewer I saw last week has been taken ill so the second interview has been delayed until probably next week when the MD has had a chance to have a chat with him.

Guess i'll just have to wait a little longer than normal for the second interview.

Hope the interviewer gets better soon!

Yes that sounds an interesting way to turn it around. Much more positive. I don't want to lie to a company, but I'm a reasonable person, you know what I mean?

I've got a phone interview with an agent today for a company who are hiring someone with skills slightly beyond me and a massive pay rise over my last job (nearly double my previous salary...) but the agent seems pretty convinced I have a chance because they've been struggling to find someone "right". Apparently this time being young and ambitious is actually on my side, because it's a young team who want success! Woo hoo!

    Hi everyone,

I've spent the entire day so far (since just before 10.00) filling in 3 applications. One for a an after school club and 2 for Teaching Assistant positions.

I've totally given up on retail jobs for now seeing as my jury service is going against me so will wait til after that's done before looking again at retail.

It does concern me a bit applying for all these school posts in case I do get offered an interview as I don't want to run the risk of it falling during jury service

Been to my outplacement. handed in my cv. Was given the following advice
    Not to use pronouns
    Use bullet points

Will redo CV at some point but as I am already getting interest, I think these are minor issues

Guessing not much is going to be happening today thanks to the Strikers.

Best of luck to them but I do wish I had the courage to go down there and say that I would do the job for half of what they are on and without any additional benefits.

    Good Morning folks

    I hope you're all well.

I have just recently completed my level 2 in book keeping, and in the process of sending out letters & cv copies to local book keeping businesses in the hope of landing a suitable job role. I would ideally like a role which I get paid for, but equally don't mind helping out voluntarily, just so that I can get the experience.

Can you suggest how I should interpret that in my letter. Obviously, if I say that I am willing to help voluntarily, then even if a prospective employer did have a paid job role to offer me, they would naturally want to take me on voluntarily so they don't have to pay me anything!!

Any advice would be grately sppreciated.
