I applied for 3 or 4 jobs a few weeks ago. I spent time writing a covering letter, letting them know why I wanted the job and what I could bring to the company.
2 weeks later, I have a long-term temp job, and 2 more interviews lined up.
I agree, I've had much more success with taking my time over fewer applications that applying for hundreds without much effort. I'd usually have about 3 a week that I'd spend a lot of time on, then top it up with some quick-load-your-CV-ones on fish4jobs just to make up the numbers.0 -
Evening all, hope all is well with everybody.
Congratulations to those with interviews and job offers.
I've got an interview set up tomorrow afternoon for another temporary role, this one is for slightly less money and further away than the one I am doing at the moment, but it is more my style of work compared to what I am doing at the moment (which i'm really not enjoying).
Still got to do my 6.00 - 2.00 shift tomorrow then get ready for the interview at 4.15. Here's hoping for a Drea type decision.....0 -

Morning all,
We went to see about doing some voluntary work last night, with the Vulcan to the Sky Trust. I'm experienced in charity admin so they were very interested in what I'd be able to do for them, and hubby was a techie in the RAF for twelve years. They want people to give tours and things so he'd love that (because he is a geek).
I just need to do something, to keep my hand in so to speak! I know a lot of you enjoy voluntary work so it's got to be worth a bashThere is nothing better in life than writing on the sole of your slipper with a biro.....0 -

Thanks guys for the feedback. I do the covering letter bit too - make sure I personalise for each role & match my skills to the job / say what I can bring to the role etc. The main site I use (Jobserve) lets you store your CVs & covering letters. However I have heard directly from agencies that they ignore the covering letters anyway! I'm going to keep plugging away as something will come up eventually. Just wish the rain would stop so I could go for a nice long walk!
Thats a nuisance regarding agents ignoring the cover notes. I just spent a couple of hours this morning doing one, grrrrrrrr:mad:0 -
Feeling bummed out today.
Last week I spent a couple of days altering my CV, prettifying it up in Photoshop. Managed to spread my CV across 2 pages. Trick is to exaggerate, but not lie1st page is my personal profile and skills and achievements. 2nd page is my employment history and qualifications. Think I got a good set up here.
Anyway, my old technique was just to get out as many generic e-mails as I could. Wasn't working so now I've been trying to tailor my covering letter to each job. I'm sending out a lot less applications but hopefully I should see a result soon. If not.. well.. I'm not sure what I'll do. It's frustrating enough as it is and feeling not quite as optimistic as usual.
I don't think employers/recruiters appreciate the time and effort put into writing a tailored letter, and when you don't even get a response to say no, it's just taking the bloody p!!!0 -

Spoke with one of the 'good guy' recruitment agencies this morning and he said the most-used site that recruiters use to find candidates is Jobsite.co.uk. So I've loaded my details up onto there as well as Jobserve, Monster, and CWjobs. He also said that the less experienced recruiters just do a word search and if you don't have certain words on your CV it won't be found. Obvious really....so I've made a couple of tweaks to my CV. Hopefully they'll be light at the end of this very long tunnel soon.0
