    Saturnalia,

You know what, you just described me as I was a few months ago (apart from the age, i'm a few years ahead of you :)).

Being unemployed does make you feel so down and if you're by yourself it's even worse. I know it looks like nothing is going on in your life and that nothing is going to change but something could be just around the corner. It might not be what you expect but something could change any day now for you.

It isn't easy but you just have to take it one day at a time, try and keep yourself busy and not just job hunting, if the suns out get out there for a walk and try to enjoy the day a little. It always did me some good.

Stay strong, remember, one day at a time. Keep posting here, we've all walked in your footsteps and know how you feel.

Same goes to all of you out there, stay strong and good luck for the rest of the week.

Morning all. Big interview day and I have woken up with a massive 'rejection of authority' hat on. I am rebelling against my own prepping!

    Interview prediction: "eat my shorts!"

I just want to do something really, truly, outrageous. Bigger than the drugs and lapdancers gaff. I joked yesterday to a friend about forgetting to wear my trousers...

Excellent - thanks for making me laugh (a rare thing especially so early in the morning!) Good luck with the interview, do let us know how it goes and what outrageous things you did (or wanted to do!!)

I've got an appointment at JCP this morning to ask an advisor to help me with travel costs to two interviews I've got later this week. God help them if they decline my request. I don't want to travel so far for work but feel like if I wait for a local job I'll never work again!

Thanks for all your kindness. It is just so hard to keep going through this. The constant rejection is like being repeatedly booted in the same sore place and I can't stand much more of it.

I'm 30 now. I'm out of work and skint, bored, can't afford any sort of life, up to my neck in debt and still needing help from my parents when I should be helping them. I'm still single, have been for 10 years nearly, and so utterly desperately lonely. I just don't know how I've failed so badly in my life. I've asked everyone what it is about me that makes no-one want to hire me, date me, be around me, but no-one can even hazard a guess so there's no way I can put it right. It's just such a mess and I can't see how to improve it, I'm out of ideas.

I don't have anything to be out of bed for honestly.

You are describing how I was starting to feel a couple of months ago but then someone on here recommended I do some voluntary work. I walked into our local Age UK (formerly Age Concern) centre, had a quick informal interview and got voluntary work one day a week assisting the tutor who teaches IT classes. Then I realised they were short of people to help out in the cafe and I volunteered for that as well so today its IT and tomorrow its working in the cafe. Wednesdays and Thursdays are now the highlight of my week, I really look forward to it and enjoy what I do (plus they let me have a free meal and pudding in the cafe which helps a lot when you don't have much money). Its this that keeps me going through the bad times, its just a shame I can't be paid for it!

Volunteering is brilliant. I do Sundays in the local British Heart Foundation shop and love working there, I might ask them if I can have a couple more shifts during the week to fill up some of my time and get me out of the house. I think that is part of my problem, I have too many hours in the day and too much time to think, plus no money to do anything interesting so the days are very long and boring. I'd say that is the worst part of unwanted unemployment - the isolation, boredom and loneliness.

The last job I got, I was asked about my charity job at the interview (I'd put it on my CV) so it's also something that can do you good in the jobs market too.

ETA: Thanks for this thread and all of you who post here, it really helps to speak to other people in the same boat. For all the talk about how high unemployment is now, I don't personally know anyone else who is out of work so I feel like even more of a failure, like there's only me getting kicked in the teeth, and this thread proves there are loads of us out there like this not just me. Of course I'd rather you all weren't in this mess too! but it really helps to know I'm not going through hell by myself.
Public appearances now involve clothing. Sorry, it's part of my bail conditions.

it is really hard to keep your spirits up and if you look back through this thread then you will see that we have all had those "down times" at one point or another. You do need to try and find something to do with your time so that you don't feel like you are just sitting around waiting to be rejected.

Hello to all those joining the thread. :)

As for not knowing anyone else unemployed, I was in the same boat. I think it helped a lot coming here and talking to others in the same position. It's obvious everyone here wants to work, will graft and in some cases have a really high level of education. It makes you realise unemployment affects people in all industries and professions and you're not an isolated case. As sad as it is to hear of so many people looking for work, it takes away the isolation.

Viewed somewhere and have made an application to the landlord. Nothing confirmed yet, but I may have somewhere to live in advance of starting the new job! :)

There are still lots of things to sort out, but everything is coming together. It's starting to hit me that I will be living away from my OH for quite some time though. :( It won't break us as a couple and it won't be forever, but I'm still sad. :(

    Hi everyone,

I've got ANOTHER appointment with an advisor at the jc today, I seem to be getting them every month or so. They never offer any help, I just feel like they want me to justify myself :(

I'm going to ask about volunteering today, I'm had no so much as a thanks but no thanks email in weeks and it's getting very very depressing now :(
  • Morning!

Well off later to sign on for the 2nd time,I hate the place so depressing and a relief when you get out, then off to hand in another application form.

Seems this week to have picked up a bit on the job adverts at least for the manual labour side of things.

Hope everybody has a good days job hunting.
