just as an example in public sector. we recently advertised a 3-6 month job at approx £7 per hour and have so far received 200 applications with more to come. at least half of these would be suitable, but how on earth can we interview everyone?

i'm assuming that this will be the case with a lot of jobs??

Agree with the above poster. Locally there was a job advertised in a retail store (think it was full-time) and had over 250 applications. So much so that the local paper ran a story on it lol. Either way, it shows the competition all job seekers are facing.
  • I've started on a new CV today, one which is much dumbed down. I think my CV is hindering things when I'm applying for admin assistant jobs.

Morizot - I just heard 'Once in a Lifetime' by Talking Heads on the radio and it made me feel strangely euphoric.

    Morning all! Good luck today.

    Did well with my presentation!

    1. You don't realise how much confidence you lost;
    2. It's great when it comes back
    3. The outfit rocked, smartest casual in the room

I have never, even in business, done a powerpoint presentation before, and I pulled it off in an interview situation. Go me. I'm a bit gobsmacked.

Got a pre-interview with recruiter, for a definite interview later in the week, and another set up for next week 100 miles away, but I will be working from home or an office I set up if I get it. It is so left field I want it, the job that no-one, ever, would imagine me doing.

I got invited to interview this afternoon, but the company hasn't got back to me to confirm. Sent a pushy email (not like me!).

A massive thanks for the advice that it was a party I dreaded going to but ended up having a good time. Perfect.

To everyone feeling a bit low and pointless today, don't worry. You can do it.

Been going through the next steps url and the university of Kent stuff as recommended by others in this form. There is some really good stuff out there. Realised that my verbal skills are my principal weakness coupled with a lack of work during the last 7 months (not that I would mention either of these points to an interviewer). Feeling a failure I then watched the Apprentice and saw all the verbal mistakes that were made. Don't feel like a failure any more:p.
vacancies for my line of work have dried up this month, am in limbo at the momement. To cheer myself up and motivate myself during the many moments of depression, I have started to behave like a teenager and play cheesy motivational songs such as

    **** perfect by Pink
    lose yourself by Eminem
    Simply the best Tina Turner
    I will survive Gloria gayner
Things can only get better Dream
    I get knocked down Chumbawumba

If anyone can suggest any other songs I can add to my list, I would be very grateful:D

One other thing, to cope with the downers causesd by the frequent setback that unemployment brings, has anyone resorted to medication? Does it work so is it better to sweat it out? I seem to swing from acceptance to optimism to depression at the moment?:o

    Hi Morizot,

How about "Don't give up" by Peter Gabriel and Kate Bush.

Regarding the downers, I suffered many of those when I was job hunting (still get them now occaisionally). I found then very hard to clear, when the sun came out I used to go for a walk around the local park and think of all the suckers stuck inside working. I've got one very good friend who I met for lunch once a week, it helps to just talk to somebody if you spend a lot of time by yourself when you're not working.

    Good luck to you.

    Hello all,

How about Song 2 by Blur?
When Tomorrow Comes by the Eurythmics?
The Way Out is Through by NIN!

I've just had an interview confirmed - hurrah, something to look forward to.

    Good luck to everyone!

Thanks for that - its cheered me up no end. I listened to the Boomtown Rats - Tell Me Why I don't Like Mondays - on Monday which was my signing on day! (I'd just like to categorically state that I have no intention of going into the job centre and open firing).

Just to add to the other posts it was in our local paper recently that a new Tesco Express were recruiting to 68 posts and they had 1,800 applications which is, apparently, around the same number of people becoming unemployed each month where I live.
