Are you staring at the phone like me, MissMotivation?

Staring at the phone and obsessively checking emails and voicemails!
My home is usually the House Buying, Renting and Selling Forum where I can be found trying to (sometimes unsucessfully) prove that not all Estate Agents are crooks. With 20 years experience of Sales/Lettings and having bought and sold many of my own properties I've usually got something to say ;)

I'm not checking emails since that's where most of my rejections appear :o

I've just read my horoscope (I'm not avoiding filling in this application form...honest) and it said:

Around Thursday and Friday, give work matters or your broader career concerns top priority. Change is in the air, occupationally speaking, and you don't want to get caught unaware. Make a move rather than waiting to see what happens.

I have a folder in my favourites with various websites, most I check daily, others just a couple of times a week.

Here are the sites from my favourites
    Local newspapers online site/Jobsite
    Local council websites x2
JobsGoPublic (though they only add vacancies in my city on a Monday AM)
Reed (their website has been playing up for me on IE recently though)
    TotalJobs
    Monster (not all that great)
Fish4Jobs (a lot of dodgy sounding ones on here I have found)
    Gumtree (as above)
    Job Centre Plus
    Third Sector
Guardian (not all that great for 'normal' jobs up here)
    Civilservice.gov.uk
    Goodmoves
    All The Top Bananas
Indeed (great for days I only have chance for a quick check)
    Milkround
    Prospects

As well as these I have a list of local companies I check one or two times a week. I have found the Jobsite website best, usually has most vacancies.

Well it's 5pm, time to start cooking tea and I've applied for nothing today, despite spending the whole day looking. I have uploaded my CV on to a couple of sites though. Is it just me or are these sort of sites completely useless? I have only had one genuine phone call from having my CV online, and it was months and months ago. I just seem to get lot's of scam offers via email.

Huge thank you for these, found quite a few jobs I hadn't seen elsewhere, and love the jobsite website!

Well i'm just back from signing on, another highlight of my week!

While I was in town though I got a phone call from an agency wanting to put me forward for a job, I popped in to see them as I was there anyway and it does seem quite an interesting job though not very well paid. They're going to put me forward and if selected interviews next week so here's hoping.

Best of luck waiting for the phone calls katkim and MissMotivation.

Sorry, completely forgot to reply to you about the open day that you told me about! (I tend to read all day and reply the next day)

I'm afraid I can't work for any call centres due to health so I don't think it'd be much good for me unfortunately! Thanks for thinking of me though :)

  • Just noticed this thread so I think I'll join in. Hope you all don't mind a wee brain dump.

I finished my postgrad in June 2010, had a sessional job from July - September but it didn't give me enough hours so still had to sign on and it screwed up my money so bad that I had no money for 2 months so I had to leave that one :( I'm just beginning to feel like it's hopeless. There are no jobs coming up in the area which I'm qualified but I also have a business degree and admin/customer service experience so that's the main jobs I've been applying for. There really aren't many at all, some of them the pay is even lower than the admin jobs I was doing before I ever decided to go off and get an education. I'm beginning to feel like it's a big waste!

I know it's not my applications letting me down. I actually help a lot of my friends with their CVs and covering letters. I've managed to help 4 friends find work in the past 6 months, just can't find it myself :(

In December I applied for a crappy inbound sales role, went through 4 stages of an interview process that took up the first 2 weeks of January. Was told after an assessment day that I would be getting the final face to face interview. Waited to hear and nothing. I phoned twice, first time I was told they would call back with a date soon. Next time I called and they said "oh all those positions were filled before xmas". I was so annoyed, why put me through the interview process then? Grrrr. In other news, I had an interview for an admin job on Tuesday there and I got the rejection letter in the post today.

There is one job I applied for that actually suits my qualifications. The closing date is tomorrow so I'm hoping and praying I get an interview for it!

Hope everyone finds something soon xx

    Hey :)

It is very disheartening, I was so angry at myself a couple days ago for losing THE job I wanted by being rubbish at the interview but we just have to try pick ourselves up and get back on it. I think there's a lot to be said for taking a day off from job hunting when you start to feel frustrated, otherwise it just comes across in the applications.

I hope you get that interview! :j

Just had a call inviting me for an interview on Wednesday :)

Earlier I had one of the agencies phone asking me if I can do temp work for a week starting Monday... they are going to let me know if I get it.

Now the issue is, what happens if they want me to do temp work for a week when I have this interview? Do I say no to a weeks work for it.... hmm predicament.

    Congrats!

If the agency call you back and say you've got the temp work for that week I'd just explain to them that you are available to start on Monday. However, you've been invited to an interview for a permanent job on the Wednesday and would require the afternoon/morning off and ask if they still want to take you.

Or you could call the interview people and ask for another day/time.

Oh and if you do tell the agency that you have an interview and they ask you which company it is with, don't tell them! I've heard too many stories of people doing that then the agency approaches the company with a pile of CVs for the job you're applying for and the job being given to one of their candidates. So if they ask, say it's a different company :)

And I just got another phone call for an interview on Tuesday! It's all go today!

Looks like that temp work might be out though.... a weeks money is good but not if it stops me getting a permanent job!
