Agencies can be a pain but unfortunatly they have their place in the job hunting landscape. To avoid them altogether is very negative as some companies have outsourced their candadate search and first line selection and only do the last part, the interview. In these "challenging times" (why do we not have problems any more, only challenges ) to aviod any avenue is a mistake. Look upon them as an unpaid outsourced facility and if they get you interviews, even for contract jobs you don't want then it's good interview practice. Of course don't forget a contract job, although not ideal for you does bring in some pennies, gets somthing extra onto your CV and expands your network, you may get to hear of another job in another dept or company before an agent gets anywhere near it.
Now that's a nice thought :rotfl:
Happy job hunting, stay positive, keep laughing.~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

OMG have just read that the Government are now proposing that the new all age careers guidance service might be a combination of online/telephone service with no face to face work at all.
How on earth you can have a proper discussion about your career just over the phone or using a website is beyond me.0 -

The object is obvious, cut staff down, centralise it in a call centre and save on buildings etc. It's about saving money, not about helping people get back into work where face to face support is just as important as the advice that comes with it.~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

It wouldn't be so bad if the governments of the past 20-30 years would get off their backsides and start creating actual jobs, reducing red tape and tax to encourage this, we need more manufacturing jobs in this country for a start! The new tax on oil and gas is short sighted i have no problem with cuts being made to benefits/services where there is blatant waste but to not focus on creating jobs and bringing more wealth into the country is even more important. The current efforts are pathetic token gestures.
Re: Networking someone mentioned earlier
My partner qualified as a teacher last year she could not get a job 80+ applying for each post, she automatically was given interviews at schools she had done work experience at because they knew her, typically she was beaten by candidates who had more experience.
She did get a job last sept-December in august helping a very disruptive child out of the blue. She had interviewed for a similar role at this school but was beaten by someone with more experience who was less likely to jump ship into a teaching role fair enough but very late on a new child arrived at the school who had a real need as well so she was phoned up and given the job.
In December she managed to get a maternity job for 6 months Jan-July at another school absolutely perfect for her first introduction to the classroom. Now she has an interview with them for a role in the school permanently because another teacher is leaving and the head wants to move people around, they have not advertised the role other than the bare minimum required because there are 3 good candidates at the school already and they had 100+ for the maternity roles in December. When using the housing forum please use the sticky threads for valuable information.0 -

How did you find it? Were you happy with the job seeking agreement that was drawn up?
I found my first venture into the Job Centre really daunting, but it wasn't as bad as I had feared. Hope you had a good experience too.0 -

the lady who i saw was quite polite, the agreement is fine and she said it can be changed at a later date, i thought it went ok, no 1 else was getting angry, just alot of paperwork involved
they have moved offices from last time i applied and this time the advisors are upstairs and you get escorted to where the advisors are by group 4 security0 -
Arghhh! Agencies are driving me mad today! See the same roles come up, phone them to tell them I can do it (audio typist/reception - 3 years experience) and get fobbed off again and again. Do they do ANYTHING for their money?!?
Stressed.Just because you made a mistake doesn't mean you are a mistake.0
