Hi, there seems to be some confusion over my post.

As the owner of the vehicle, do I have to be insured on the vehicle even though I won't be using it? My partner is using the car, it's remaining in my name and he will inform his insurance that I own it and he is driving it. I just want to make sure that as the owner of the vehicle, I don't require my own insurance and my partner can drive it under his own policy.
  • he can drive it under his own policy providing his own policy is for that car

    When is the tax due?

On this subject I have a related question

My parents have 2 cars, one main one and the other (a 14 year old car - my old one) for occasional use if they both need cars at the same time.

If the main car is insured in my dads name, with my mum as named driver, therefore they can both drive the main car (And my dad is the main user of this car)

Can they therefore not have insurance on the 2nd car and my dad drive it on the third party extension from his policy on the main car?

Other than the issue of need insurance to tax the car - is there any reason why this would not work?

    Thanks in advance

That's what we are doing :)

for a car to be driven there must be an insurance certificate somewhere on the planet with its number plate on before any third party extensions can be considered

Yes, as long as there is a valid insurance certificate specifically for that car. Not another car, with his name on it, but your car only.

    lazer,
If the car is legally jointly owned, you would probably not be covered (even though it would not be obvious because there is no central record of the legal owner of vehicles) because the "other cars" extension is usually limited to cars that are NOT owned or leased to the insured person.

If the second car was legally owned and registered as your mum's, and your dad has made the insurers fully aware of the situation, he is probably okay.
Usually when getting a quote, you are asked: How many other vehicles do you have access to? but I would tend to play safe and inform them specifically, with some record or proof, so that they could not claim later that he had not made them fully aware. I tend to think that if they were fully aware they would decline and say that a separate policy is required.

Remember the "other cars" extension is for Third Party cover only; not comprehensive.

All in all, the cost for a specific insurance policy on a low-mileage second car, insured by a mature couple, is probably worth it, given the extra cover provided by a comprehensive policy.
