    Flyboy152 is correct.

But if the car is on the road being driven under "driving other cars" extension, then it doesn't need its own insurance (unless its a clause in the DOC policy.)

Only if left parked on the road does it need its own insurance.
There does seem to be a conflict of rules here and needs further investigation. Having had the opportunity this evening, to have a chat with our local bobby, he informs me that the car needs to be insured if it is driven on the road. It is how they catch motorists who do not have insurance, by identifying the car. He seems to believe this is covered under PACE rules. But I thought that was to cover the seizure of the car, rather than enforcing the rule for insurance. Now, I know the police are not always the most reliable source when it comes to the law, so I will need to have chat with a couple of more people.

This is disturbing, because having spent the last twenty years in the motor trade, I was always under the impression that a car needs to be insured whilst on the road and I never questioned that assumption. This could actually tear apart the fabric of the universe. :D

Ok, sorry to interrupt but I am a little confused.

I am the legal owner of the car but will not be renewing my insurance. However my partner is changing his insurance so that it covers my car. He will tell then that I own it but he is driving it so he needs cover for that specific vehicle. Is this ok or must the legal owner have insurance despite them never driving the vehicle? Thanks.

He needs to speak to his insurers to ask them as only they will know the answer.

Id they agree it's not a problem, make a note of the person's name and the date / time of the call in case their are any arguements about it in the future

The vehicle needs to be insured by someone.

As previously posted, he needs to tell his insurer 2 things: that he is neither the owner nor the registered keeper, then see if the insurer will cover it.

Lucy, will your partner be insuring the actual car, or will he just be insured to drive it?

Insured on the actual car. He is putting his car off the road as it's dead and is getting insurance on my car.

I am sorry to have to ask again, but just to be sure, you mean that the car itself will be insured; the policy will be attached to the car?

It is just that when some people say, "insured on a car," they mean they are just insured to drive it, not necessarily having the car insured.

You may already know to do this but when you get your renewal documents make sure your insurer isn't going to auto renew the policy. You may need to let them know you aren't renewing, don't assume the policy will lapse without you having to let them know.

    Yeh I will fully cancel.

No he will definitely be insured on the car. He will change his vehicle details with the insurance company.
