Well, £1.40 for diesel, £1.36 for Petrol, average price across the UK.
That's getting slightly worrying. Especially for those living in more rural areas.
Will the UK be able to cope with these high prices? It has a knock on effect to pretty much everything.
Couldn't quite believe it when it cost me £74 to fill up the car a couple of days ago. At £1.40 a litre, I'd be over £80. For a standard diesel car.
Higher rents, higher food prices, higher transport costs, higher electric / gas costs, all well exceeding inflation.
Somethings gonna give? I'm just wondering what, when, and how bad it will be.
Yes Graham, something I've been saying was going to happen for years now (and been scoffed at I might add by the 'head in the sand' types on here), the simple fact is the world has passed peak production of oil, cheap oil (the stuff that is required for the world's economies to work) has all but gone.
Of course we're all going to be ok because 'technology will save us' won't it ??
Well everytime I go to the 'fuel station', I see the same old petrol and diesel that has been sold for decades, so nothing new there then.
I'm afraid this is only the beginning and it's going to get much much worse. How does $200 oil get ya ?? We are highly likely to be near this figure within 5 years, at that point society has we've come to see it will start to collapse.
Of course I'm expecting a few rolling head smilie posts from the usual suspects after my post, but are you laughing when you're filling your car/van/truck up............... I doubt it.Have owned outright since Sept 2009, however I'm of the firm belief that high prices are a cancer on society, they have sucked money out of the economy, handing it to banks who've squandered it.0 -

Hi Ad!
Nice to see you. There have been some changes to fuel ..LPG, biodiesel. Electric.
while I get that ultimately electric isn't necessarily green (unless we all have pv clad wind turbines ) I still don't understand why the more advanced electric cars aren't being marketed here. ...Only the uber $$$tesla has made it, if being sold in a window behind harrods counts...and the aptera etc are better ''compromise'' vehicles as regards range etc than the gwhizzes we have here.0 -

Now I don't want to be pedantic (but am going to be) but a collapse is something that happens quite quickly. Surely you don't think that society will collapse when we notice that oil is $200 per barrel?
We are still an oil based society hence forecourts still focus on petrol and diesel but you make it sound as if there have been no technological advancements that may mitigate $200 oil. i.e. cars are much more fuel efficient these days (I suspect that even Americans are catching on), electric/ hybrid cars are advancing rapidly, renewables will supply more of our energy use, and so on.
$200 oil will require readjustment some of which might be painful. The collapse of society though - you're just having a laugh to get a reaction.0 -

Personaly I think the bigger point of $200 barrel is that other currently non viable sources will come in to play also.
Not saying we don't need to change, electricity looks to be the way forward but also I personally do not think $200 would cause society to change that greatly.
Like I am doing people will adapt to cut dependancy.0 -
The solutions are car sharing, more efficient cars and working from home.
Car sharing does not work unless all passengers work at same office and start/end at same time. Any missed departure will cost a fortune (taxi fare etc.)
More efficient cars - modern cars are quite efficient. We probably can't get more fuel economy unless go unconventional way like hybrid etc.
We just have to bear fuel price rise. The alternative is public transport which is no cheaper.
Moving closer to work is bit risky as in current climate, there is no job security and you can't move every now and then once you have a family.
So, we just have to accept the price rise.Happiness is buying an item and then not checking its price after a month to discover it was reduced further.0 -
I can't see why they can't reduce the fuel duty to give a constant tax take and offset the increase in VAT take as the price increases - yes it would only dampen the price movements by one fifth but every little helps...
people will use cars whatever and its the perfect way to tax those who are untaxable, yes its not fair on us good citizens who pay tax, but at least those who pay little if any tax have to pay it.
I'm talking scotchers, odd job men, builders etc0 -

Depends. People commute to timetables...I'd be prepared to get to my place of work 30 mins early/leave 30mins late in many circumstances if it were cheaper and as convenient as simialr public transport times.
e.g. from here in the west DH could get/give a lift to some one in West london before going into the city. If receiving the left he could get PT to the collection point: often a better option than train now!0 -
remember when truckers went on strike at 80p a litre(strange havent heard anything lately)
if your full/time job is a driver--fuel price is very painful
id give my right arm for 80p a litre now
after fuel im on a lower wage than 5 years ago£48515 interest £181 (2009)debt/mortgage-MFIT/T2/T3

They obviously won't work for everyone, but they are the only options people may have.
What I'm noticing in this thread is that people are happy to complain but not prepared to make the slightest sacrifce to deal with the situation.
"Get to work half an hour early, OUTRAGEOUS!
"Car share with someone other than my next door neighbour? NO WAY"
"Swap my car for a more efficient one, LOL way too much hassle!"
A spooky resemblence to the moaning about house prices. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0
