If I could build my life around not needing a car, can you tell me how I would do the 40 mile round trip every day for work purposes?
No doubt you will tell me to get a job closer to home. Good idea. Shame if I did that, I'd probably be taking a 60% pay cut at the same time.
How about a home closer to the job!0 -
I have one tank per month...
£5 per tank extra really isnt going to push me over the edge, if you feel it, drive more economically, a 15% achievement in fuel savings is easily achievable over standard driving mostly.Plan

Petrol could be 2 pounds a litre and people still wouldn't give up their cars- people could build their lives around not needing a car, but they prefer not to, and so the govt is right to screw them over big time. How about a home closer to the job!
We're in the Scottish Highlands. OH has to leave for work at 3.30am. There is no public transport at that time, we have no choice but to drive, his work is a 50 mile round trip away.
We would dearly love to move nearer to his work as he's sick of the costs associated with the commute but nearer = more expensive housing, we can't afford to buy a house there and private rents (family sized house) are ridiculous.
We feel we're stuck between a rock and a hard place and no, there's not hellish much 'choice' involved in it.Herman - MP for all!0 -

Electric car or motorbike.
~Not all bad looking either.
Hybrid diesels are next I remember seeing the hyundai I-flow Up to 90 to the gallon and GTI performance if I remember correctly.0 -
Electric car or motorbike.
Fair enough suggestions, but the electric car would be difficult considering I don't have a drive, or garage to charge it from.
Secondly, there are no charging points anywhere around here in Devon, as far as I'm aware.
Thirdly, massive outlay cost, for a stupid box on wheels.
As for the motorbike, no thanks. 3 classmates at school are dead after motorbike incidents. Kinda puts you off. Used to want one though! Also a bit trickey carrying a server on a motorbike I'd guess.or Cycle. 20 miles isn't that far TBH
Cycle? 40 miles a day? On Devon A and B roads?
LOL. I'd rather take my chances on the motorbike.0 -

So how do you propose people carry out your solution?
It's fine if you live in a town and work just 5 miles away on a bus route and theres a bus stop within a mile or so of your door, but I'm talking reality here.
People can still only claim 40p a mile for the first 10,000 miles business mileage, I doubt that covers the cost of fuel on a normal saloon now, let alone wear on tear. Theres far more of an impact to the UK as a whole than just saying "well dont drive as much".
People have a living to make.
With regard to what you say about needing a car I believe you are right my work involved travelling to various buildings and carrying a fair amount of test gear. I think it would have been impossible to do it using public transport and that was inside the M25.
As regards 40p a mile if you say an average car does 30mpg you would get £12 so it would pay for petrol and go some way to running costs.0 -
The solutions are car sharing, more efficient cars and working from home.
Working form home one day a week is 20% saved in travel costs, it's huge, and so easy, just need a desk based job and to work for a company that isn't run by idiots. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
Electric car or motorbike.
I've started seeing a few electric bicycles around here lately. Not great for long journeys like Dev's, but fine for zipping into town and back. I stopped one of the library visitors and asked about hers as she pulled up. It was only the same price as a good non-electric pushbike and it gets up and down the hills round here. If prices go up much more this is something I'd seriously consider as it would only take about 6 months for me to achieve break-even.Please stay safe in the sun and learn the A-E of melanoma: A = asymmetry, B = irregular borders, C= different colours, D= diameter, larger than 6mm, E = evolving, is your mole changing?
