I do about 3,500 miles a year in my old petrol 2.0 litre.
I know I have scope to cut that down by 1000 miles without if effecting me much.
I expect most people could cut down their mileage if they had a good hard look at what trips they do and why.0 -
You need to improve your credit rating then !!!
I think its got more to do with where I live than my credit rating. Its £60 for everyone. Do they cover you for more than that down on the moors then purch? Please stay safe in the sun and learn the A-E of melanoma: A = asymmetry, B = irregular borders, C= different colours, D= diameter, larger than 6mm, E = evolving, is your mole changing? Most moles are not cancerous, any doubts, please check next time you visit your GP.

The Pay at Pump at Tesco always gives me £ 99, and at Morrisons £ 100.
I havn't used it anywhere else.
The nearest Sainsbury's don't have the facility, but they do have the cheapest fuel.
TIP: If you are on the M5 and need fuel, drop off at Jct25 Taunton and pop into Hankridge Farm retail park right next to Motorway...Sainsbury's is always 2 or 3p cheaper than anywhere else in the area.
P.S. 5,500 posts and that's my first useful MSE tip.'In nature, there are neither rewards nor punishments - there are Consequences.'0 -

It's not just money at the pump which will go up. Transport costs make up part of nearly everything we buy.0

What would be the point? It gets the same miles per gallon as my 10 year old diesel Citroen! And yet it gets lots of tax breaks because it's "so green". Ha!0 -
Petrol could be 2 pounds a litre and people still wouldn't give up their cars- people could build their lives around not needing a car, but they prefer not to, and so the govt is right to screw them over big time.
I do like these types of responses.
If I could build my life around not needing a car, can you tell me how I would do the 40 mile round trip every day for work purposes?
No doubt you will tell me to get a job closer to home. Good idea. Shame if I did that, I'd probably be taking a 60% pay cut at the same time.
So how do you propose people carry out your solution?
It's fine if you live in a town and work just 5 miles away on a bus route and theres a bus stop within a mile or so of your door, but I'm talking reality here.
People can still only claim 40p a mile for the first 10,000 miles business mileage, I doubt that covers the cost of fuel on a normal saloon now, let alone wear on tear. Theres far more of an impact to the UK as a whole than just saying "well dont drive as much".
People have a living to make.0 -
I can't see why they can't reduce the fuel duty to give a constant tax take and offset the increase in VAT take as the price increases - yes it would only dampen the price movements by one fifth but every little helps...I think....0

Its ok because they've kindly put up train fares by 8% to make sure driving is still more economical.0

At £1.40/£150 a litre though you may not have much choice Graham, tough as that may seem.....
I can't see How fuel is going to go down now though.0
