Asda have a new policy on self service, up to £3 I think.
What is the Tesco policy on self service? One Tesco takes up to 33% but not sure about my local with their new machines. Definitely takes 10%

My local won't take anything on the self-serve unless you've purchased the item - which I find really strange because if you go to a check-out they will accept anything (some only take up to 10%, but once you go regularly you will soon get to know the ones that will take more than that).

Two other Extras near me won't take any coupons whatsoever, unless you've bought the item, even on the manned tills.

To the OP - don't give up, you perhaps just picked the wrong assistant/store for your first go. I usually just smile, hand over a bunch and ask if any will work. Some will scan the 10% but some will just try the lot!

I have a question - if you use your clubcard each time when you're using lots of coupons, is there any chance Tesco could somehow monitor you and restrict your coupon usage? Or do they not really care?

It's never happened to me, started coupon-use big-time in the Spring and never shop without them. I always use my clubcard too.

Don't worry about it. The only hassle you may get, very occasionally, would be if a jobsworth member of CS staff wanted to make a comment if they saw your receipt. Even then they would only comment that 'you've used too many coupons, our policy is 10%' or whatever, and you just say 'oh, sorry, I didn't know that as I normally use another store where they scan any'.

I have had a lecture twice about it, but only because I raised my profile by taking the receipt to CS for a nice R&R freebie and they were not too chuffed to give stuff away and refund more than I had paid on my credit card. Even if you are not an R&Rer, you may like to make sure you don't overdo the coupon-use on something you have to collect from CS, like a console game or phone.

I now tend to separate my R&R attempts with a couple of normal small purchases, pay for them with about 3 coupons saying 'these bits need to be separate as they are for my Mum'. Then I do a separate transaction for the bulk of my other shopping using however many coupons the lad on the till will scan! Then CS don't get to look at that receipt (unless of course there is an unexpected overcharge on there!).

It is at the discretion of the checkout bod!!......they have to take them out of your hands to scan them...if they are jobsworth then they won't take them

But have to say i don't have a prob at Tesco - but i don't milk it i probably hand over just £1 or £2 worth. However checkout lady at Asda today told me new policy they only take if purchased item - she reckons they have 'tons of notices upstairs' telling them so.

No you don't need to buy the item, they will scan at Tesco. I'd suggest using the self-scan though, or a young lad as Welsh-Dragon suggests.

I have never had a problem with quantity coupons or percentage ... They are only rejected if the SA notes they are store specific or that they do not scan in ...
In my short experience I have paid less than 25% at two Tesco's on occasions .... I only do smallish shops though ... £20 to £30 usually ...

The only time a SA has stopped is when I bought 3 items that totalled just £5.80 ... I handed a little wad of coupons and when she had got down to £2.10 she said she would have to stop because she couldn't go below "50%" ? ... but i think that was a token gesture as I already had! ... But she was very nice about it ....

Today I spent £24 and paid £12 and some pennies ...

Remember when we used to just pay it all! ... I can ... but it's fading!

this question was about coupons from a Sainsbury magaizine - does it also apply to the coupons in the latest Asda magazine - I've read through previous postings and it seems to infer you can use them in Tescos.....the goods they refer to are in Tesco too (except for the cake) , so is it just down the checkout operator? (must admit I play safe and just use newspaper coupons normally)

Yes it is possible to use Asda magazine coupons in Tesco as they will scan. Only thing is Tesco cashiers may refuse them as they are not really supposed to take them. It's OK though, if they say no they just hand them back and you can try another cashier another day. IMO most cashiers, particularly young lads in larger stores, or evening staff, will scan them!

I cut the Asda ones out WITHOUT the green bits (re Asda.com and the side bit that says Asda) so they look similar to other magazine coupons. I hand one or two over in a handful of other coupons.
