  • When I was at uni it wasn't unusual for the science students to do 9 til 6 without a break. So you've got to be grateful for small mercies.

(And re: arts students not having a lot of lectures/contact time, yes that's true but we were still expected to put in 40 hours a week through reading texts - I read everything twice to get critical about it - research, writing essays etc, so we didn't exactly slack off! Or my friends and I didn't anyway...)

I think everyone is expected to do 40 hours a week. I know I was - hence only having 12 hours contact time.

Although the classes are timetabled as, say, 10-11, in reality they will be 10:05-10:55 (or ten past until ten to sometimes) to allow students some time to move between locations. Although it's not ideal, that is ten minutes which can be used to eat something on the go. Making a sandwich takes a few minutes in the morning, same with heating up some soup.

Your choice is basically like it or lump it. Being an optional module you will most likely be told to simply change classes. We can't always do the classes that we ideally want to do.

I used to take a flask of tea and a packed lunch, it's easy and you can eat/drink in lectures as long as you're quiet.

In answer to your question, the Univesity do not expect you to work for 7 hours without a break, but they do expect you to make sensible decisions when selecting modules.

You take your lunch with you and stop complaining, or you change your optional Spanish Module.

  • welcome to the real world!!! If you can't work your way round this little problem, god help you in the world of work! cant remember the last time I had a break, lunch or even got chance to go to the loo during my working day!
Stop moaning and get on with it!:D

goodness me - thank heavens you aren't doing the same radiotherapy course my son is - he is 1st year and lectures are from 9am until 4.30pm 4 days per week!

how on earth will you ever survive the working world if you can't work out how to eat a packed lunch during a seminar?:)

now I know why my son laughs at the other students in his halls who moan at having to complete 8 hours of lectures PER WEEK !

in my working life during busy times I have often worked solidly from 8.30 am until 6pm with barely time for a loo break let alone a lunch break - you really have no idea:rotfl:

Seriously?! 4 days a week, that would kill me!
We only have 9 hours contact a week, thank god!
But for some reason it all seems to be on a Friday this semester, I should be alright, i am good friends with my Spanish lecturer, we go to Zumba together and she lives down the road from me. Just have to let her know the situation i guess, and see what happens.

I can't change the option, languages are what i have based my entire degree around, I don't even know what the other options were!

It just seems unfair, as at the start of the year the uni were trying to put us off picking languages altogether, and now it seems i am being punished because i have picked a language. Also i will have an exam for spanish :( and none of the other modules have any exams!

Oh well it's only 12 weeks and i am outta uni forever!

Do you have any idea how complex timetabling is? It must be even worse when you have to start involving other institutions. You must have been given the options to choose from and knew what you were getting in to, and if not there is always the short window open to allow any changes. You can change it, you just don't want to.

Imagine having to do an exam for a class?! Terrible.

No, we were asked to pick our options 5 weeks ago, didn't look at the other choices cause there was no point. My course is tourism, and depending on the options we pick can be classed as tourism and languages, tourism and hospitality or tourism and transport.
All the way through my course i have picked language options, and am about to start the professional level Spanish (highest option available), I do not intend to give up an honors degree with professional level spanish and switch to a hospitality or tansport module.

Well i have only done 1 other exam in uni before, and that was spanish last year.:D

Like i said, just gotta deal with being a bit late here and there for 12 weeks and i'm finished :)
