    You misunderstand.

You only do that if you want to sorn the car. There is no point doing that mid month.

Why? And what's it got to do with this thread? (Your contribution to the MOT issue this thread is about needs to be ignored too)

it was a direct response to a post that popped up 2 days ago #11, you probably didnt even read the thread from the beginning so i will forgive you for jumping in without the facts,
the mot issue wasn't advice for anyone it was a question asked by me as i was unsure about how it works,

If you want to tax the car again within 21 days you cannot apply for a refund.

catch 22, if you have no insurance you have to sorn the car and return the tax, does that mean that if you sell the car then the new owner wont be able to tax it untill the 21 days have passed?

Dunno. That's what it says on the link you posted about applying for a refund. Anyway, it's hypothetical isn't it?

We'll have to cross that bridge when we come to it.

So, both Quentin & Inactive missed the point that Paddedjohn was making,

Paddedjohn was making a point that if anyone has a car and they buy another whilst waiting to sell their original car, they will have to take the original car off the road (no change there) but they will also HAVE TO SORN the original car - and when you SORN, you return your tax disc so now the car will be on your driveway with no tax - making test drives illegal, the test drive would also be illegal because the new law requires the vehicle to be named on the insurance certificate. This will also mean the RK loses out on any remaining tax for that month, and means the new keeper has the hassle of buying tax for the car before they can take it away, selling the car on with tax as an incentive to the buyer will no longer be possible. Unless you find a buyer for your car on the same day you buy a new car.

Seems to me the only way round it will be to sell your car first then franticly (sp?) shop around for a new motor without any transport! Or buy your new motor and store it uninsured/SORNd on the drive while you try to sell the old one. Or hope that your insurer will agree to insure both cars for a period on the understanding you are trying to sell one of them.

So, another clear, easy to understand, well thought out bit of motoring legislation then

    I despair sometimes

    And it’s “frantically” :D

But you do not need an MOT to drive to an MOT station

You are only exempted if you have a pre-arranged appointment for an MOT.

From early 2011 a new scheme is being introduced to make sure that all vehicles stay insured or a Statutory Off Road Notification (SORN) is made.

This is not yet law AFAIK.

It is still shown on the Government's website as "prospective" legislation
