    Hi
I got through on Friday evening without any trouble. This was to sign up so maybe the number you are trying is different? They did say that if I had any questions or problems to phone the same number.
    Hope you get through soon.
    Cheers

  • My pc turned up eventually but the box was rather damaged, I acccepted it as if I sent it back I probably wouldn't get a replacement for months. Thinking about it though, their terms and conditions say that if you have to give it back for any reason (cancelled contract) you must have the original packaging in very good condition. Mine has red wine all over it! Now to get it in writing from Redten that it wont affect me if I have to send it back.

Just seen this offer, as pointed out by a friend.

8Mb broadband - starting from £20 per month
free desktop PC and 19” LG LCD monitor (apparently worth over £500).

Is there a catch, because this offer seems too good to be true? Also has anyone used this ISP, because this is the first I have heard of them? Only problem is the "fair usage policy".
  • any ideas?
  • I've just had a quick look on there website and the first thing I see is £19.99 a month is based on a 3 year contract.
If you cancel within 3 years you have to send the computer back within 14 days of cancelling if you don't you will be billed the full amount for the computer.
  • See this thread for details, loads of people have taken the offer and given lots of details about how well it's gone so far.

In summary, broadband seems ok, no better or worse than any other. Fair use policy doesn't seem that bad to me, they just restrict during the busy parts of the day, do all your p2p downloading overnight. pcs have turned up and appear to be pretty good, very nice monitor, good loooking pc with pci express slot to add better graphics, not really used the pc much but it seems good. Not sure it's worth £500 tho, can get a really good dual core processor pc with the rest the same for about £400. Remains to be seem whether the 3 year contract will be cost effective, I'm starting to think it's not! Can either get free broadband with sky or orange if you're with them or I've seen an offer recently for £9.99/month for the first year so I guess I'm paying £410 over the odds for the broadband (includes £50 set up charge). Hopefully I wont notice the extra that the broadband costs each month whereas I would have noticed paying £400 up front for a pc!
  • The motherboard is a Foxconn 945GZ7MC with 2 x DDR2 slots. It's a good board with one big fault: only one IDE connector, to which Redten has connected the 160GB hard disk and the DVD writer. This leaves four SATA cables for expansion, but these are not much use if you have an existing IDE drive you'd like to plug in.

I added an extra 512MB of RAM to my Redten machine, and the board switched automatically into dual channel mode, even though the RAM was from another supplier. Adding the extra RAM boosts the Vista Experience score of the RAM from 2.9 to 4.7, and has the added benefit of boosting the Vista graphics rating from 2.1 to 3.0.

The computer has no problem running the Vista Aero interface in its base form, and with the extra 512MB RAM it's a solid Vista platform. The graphics are much better than you'd expect from an onboard system, and unless you're an out-and-out gamer you don't need to upgrade to a separate graphics card.

Note that the Redten system unit is incredibly noisy (think hovercraft lifting off) but this is mainly due to the processor cooling fan and the additional case fan. The latter can be disconnected as the system is already overcooled, and the processor fan can be speed-controlled using options in the motherboard BIOS. If you reduce the CPU fan speed from the maximum of 2550rpm to around 1500rpm (by setting its cut-in temperature to 35degrees C) it makes the entire system quiet enough to use for DVD movie or MP3 playback in a living room.

    OK, here's the motherboard details.

It's a Foxconn. The model number is not visible, but it's one of these 4 possibilities, according to the leaflet: 945P7MC, 945G7MC, 945PL7MC or 945GZ7MC. Dunno what the difference is!

    2 x DDR2 DIMM slots
    1 x FDD connector
    1 x IDE connector
    4 x serial ATA connectors
    2 x PCI slots
    1 x PCI express slot

    Hope this is helpful

as anyone got the redten offer, free computer and broadband £20/mth for 3yrs.is it any good ? thankyou
    Regards

    Mark
  • Hi Richcook,

I feel nervous about this deal simply because it's a three year contract. A lot of things with technology and pricing in a short amount of time and you may be locking yourself into a deal which isn't so good a year or two from now.

Have you had a look at the Dell site to see how much it would cost to buy a new computer outright vs the cost of going through Redten?

    Kind regards,
    Samara
