Just had a quick read back and can see we are all getting a few things ticked off our lists now. Flowers, hairstyles etc . . . . .I am still over 100 days to go but the counter is really dropping off now. Its all becoming so very real now with all today's purchases. I still have a clutch bag to find for me. I want something for my lippy and hotel key (so i can use our room when i need a wee!!!!)0 -
I think, im quite lucky, I have quite long and fairly thick eyelashes- I think I am going to eyelash extensions for the wedding though, and if I dont I will go for tinted with clear mascara!
Melanie- its so nice to see everyones plans and ideas coming together so nicely now. I do think time is going very quickly now so it will be July before we realise it! Oh and Im liking the jewellery you got today.
I still need to get earrings and a bracelet. Earrings- Im going to get these:
http://www.hsamuel.co.uk/webstore/d/3127087/9ct+gold+freshwater+pearl+stud+earrings/
I wear cheapy pearl earrings most days so thought I would treat myself to some gold ones whilst I have the opportunity, and I know these will get worn a lot after the wedding, I may even get them tomorrow. No idea about a bracelet yet, I will have to keep an eye out.0 -
Made the appointment today to give our notice, so that's that done, plus the ringmaker got back to me and said it's perfectly feasible to get the rings done in this time frame, if we order soon.
I need to start planning the handfasting altar and ceremony, thinking about food ordering (we're providing basic sausages/burgers/buns), flowers (we have to have flowers, apparently?), email my parents to beg for money as Mr G's parents have put in hundreds so far and we're bleeding them dry! And reading this thread I've just gone "Oh £%!". We're meant to have a CAKE?"
Where I'm going to pull all this money from I've no idea, considering my priority right now is a hundred-quid-a-bottle medication needed for one of my dear rats who has developed severe epilepsy.I say we take off and nuke the entire site from orbit. It's the only way to be sure.0 -
Ghostlove- you don't have to have a cake! I was just going to make my own, three tiers of simple buttercream iced sponge cake with a little topper, but my mum really wanted to pay for a 'proper' wedding cake so now we are having one. I already have the tins so a homemade one wold have been less than a tenner (and possibly tastier - I do a good cake!)
As a true latecomer I know nothing about you all. Who wants to tell me what they've got planned for their weddings? :j0 -
We have to have flowers, apparently?.... We're meant to have a CAKE?"
Still wouldn't be without them right?
And - there is no 'meant to have' or 'have to have' about a wedding other than saying the contractual words. Everything else is just trimmings that you can either have or not have.
Flowers - all I'm having is a bouquet, and buttonholes for MrD, our mums, his dad, and my granddad for £37.96. (I am also having flowers tied to the back of chairs but that comes in the 'decor' section of my budget).
Cakes - I'm baking my own cheesecakes - will be making 60 individual portions for £70 including the cake stand.
There are many ways to do things MSE style and get the most for your money.smithkinson wrote: »As a true latecomer I know nothing about you all. Who wants to tell me what they've got planned for their weddings? :j
We're getting married on Tuesday 17th July, 2pm, at our local registry office. With immediate family only (parents, siblings and their children), maximum of 12 guests (7 are confirmed). Then after that we're coming back to our house for a small BBQ.
Then on Saturday 21st July, 5pm, we're holding a house/garden party for slightly wider family circle and a few friends. Original guest list was 51, but so far we've had 22 confirmations but 6 knock backs.
We're doing our own catering, and as I've said above we're having cheesecake for 'wedding cake'. There is a no-formality rule about our wedding. We're not having a first dance or cutting the cake, and on our invites we wrote "no speeches allowed". We're also providing lots of alcohol and soft drinks.
As part of the garden party I got 2 3x3m gazebos for a total bargain £17 each, compared to hiring costs of a 6x3m marquee. Very pleased with this!! And we're hiring 5 4ft round tables, with 30 chairs.
Decorations -got sooo much all DIY and have saved an absolute fortune. I have spent £247.61, but if I'd got it all premade or paid someone else to come and set up etc I could have spent £1046.10!!! I've got: INSIDE the house: Banquet roll with burgundy runner and sash along the front. A large photoframe with all our anniversary cards in (we'll have been together 13years when we tie the knot). A dessert fork and spoon with mr and mrs engraved to go on the cake table for us to have our 'wedding' cake with. Mr & Mrs wooden letters that my big brother is making us. White napkins with burgundy ribbons. 16 Cloud 9s to hang in the corners of the rooms downstairs. and little heart table confetti. OUTSIDE the house: 56 Paper hearts to hang around the garden. 12 jam jars with tealights covered with tissue paper and spelling out our names, Gazebo with bows on the legs, white table cloths with burgundy runner to go on hired tables, 5 Cloud 9s to tie up in the corners of the garden, 12 garden candles with bows on. Gerberas to tie on to the chairs. Fairy Lights on legs of gazebo, and Candles as centerpieces.
Entertainment - we're using our current sound system to stream music around the downstairs of our house and the back garden. Will make a play list with a mix of really cheesy pop from when we met (think SClub7, Steps, Five etc ha!) and current chart music. We've also got a 'giant' Jenga (it's not *that* big), a finnish bowls game, and Giant pick up sticks.
Hair & Make up - doing myself. Since we're essentially having two days of it I couldn't justify paying money for both days.
My wedding dress - love it!! It was a full length dress but because of having a garden party I wanted something shorter so they ordered it just below knee length - love it. If you want to see photos of it PM me and I'll send you an email.
My shoes has been a total headache - I got a pair of gorgeous Miss KG shoes, silver strappy and just fab. But when I first went to see my dress my mum said they wouldn't go. So from then onwards I was on a shoe hunt. Now if you ask any of my friends to define me you can bet they'd mention fab shoes. So it was important that I got some shoes that weren't just normal wedding shoes. Anyway I ended up buying a pair of Rainbow Club shoes - and they are lovely (even though I do think they are boring compared to my Miss KG shoes). When I tried my dress on at the weekend the RC shoes definitely went better.
Jewellery - I've got some hair clips from Glitzy Secrets and a necklace and bracelet from debenhams.
Flowers - have already mentioned above - having burgundy and white gerberas.
MrD's suit is lovely and he did a very good job choosing it.Got him new shoes, underwear, shirt, cufflinks etc.
Gifts for thank yous - got my Granddad some cufflinks that say "Grandad of the bride" which I'll give him in the morning, and we've got our parents a large photo frame that I'll get a photo printed off.
Rings - bought off the web, mine is 18ct white gold 2mm heavy D. MrD's is 9ct yellow gold and massive lol.
We've got a photographer - wasn't going to bother with one, but given how much we've saved everywhere else (and thanks to my mum paying the majority of my dress, and MrD's parents getting his suit) we could afford one. Plus this way we'll have a good photo to put in said photoframes for our parents. We're paying £200 and have him for 2-3 hrs. He's just going to snap the ceremony. Guests (and myself) can snap away at the receptions.
Invites & Thank you Cards - made our own stationery.I won't clog up everyone's webbrowsers with oodles of photos - but here is my current 'wedding' board.

Hahaaaaa as if we mind!!
Hehe yeah I thought not
Sounds like a lovely two days. Was there any particular reason for having the ceremony on the Tuesday?
We were planning a big festival style day next September. We were hiring a camping field with tipis on it and having a BBQ and BYOB type thing after a small ceremony for family at the registry office. Everyone could camp after and we would have a bonfire in the evening. It sounded, it still sounds, so lovely. But it just wasn't right. I wasn't excited about any of it. We had a budget of 10k, but were planning to spend about 4k, and I just didn't want to. We thought about eloping, but I'd have to have my mum there, and there's others we would like there. Then we considered small ceremony and a meal somewhere nice. Priced it up for about 12 people and it was silly! Plus we couldn't think of anywhere we would like to eat. The one place that was 'us' is a student pub. So we thought, screw it, let's just go there. So I called all of our 'must have' people and got all their busy dates, put them on a calendar, and there was only one date left in the whole summer! So I booked it, and there was only one slot left at the registry office. I guess it was mean't to be. Now I'm really happy and super excited about it! I think people think it's just to be cheap or something, but the day will be so 'us', I don't really care what people think. :T
So now it's morning ceremony (9:45am! omg!) for family (about 20 people now as the only room left was the biggest one), then sending them back to the hotel for coffee while we do photos, then over to the pub for 12ish with meal at 1pm I think. We're going to have it closed while we eat and then it will be open to the public.
What time is everyone having food? I'm worried 1pm is a bit early, but then it's lunch time so I guess not?0 -
Ghostlove- do you actually want flowers? Do you want a cake? If you dont actually want these things then dont feel you have to have them. If you want them you dont have to pay 'professionals' loads, you could make the cakes yourself, or get them from somewhere like m and s, and flowers if you did want them you could go artifical, or, if you really wanted fresh you could do them yourself for a fraction of the price- but only if you actually want them. Hope your rat is ok.
Smithkinson- Im Emma, Im getting married 28th July in Hampshire, and my planning in coming along nicely! My colour scheme is pink (bridesmaids are in dark pink but there will be other shades incorpoarated in). I have 2 bridesmaids (2 of my sisters, one is 30 and is 12 and taller than me!!:rotfl:) and I have one flowergirl whi is going to look so cute! We are getting married at 3 with about 40 guests who will then be following us to our reception where we are having an informal sit down and the food is a cold meat buffet. In the evening we have invited about another 70 people and we will be having a hot and cold buffet, cupcake tower and sweetie table.
We are on a tight budget which slightly increased due to generous peoples contributions. All the big things are booked/ purchased and I have got so many bargains as Ive gone along- like my dress was in a sample sale reduced from £900 to £200, things like my cupcake tower I got from a lady who does the most amazing cakes and was just starting to branch out and expand so was doing a deal, same with chair covers I got for £1 each including sash and set up! Ive really enjoyed the planning despite a few stresses, ie best man (ohs brother, his only sibling) telling us in Feb he didnt think he would be able to come as he is touring and wont be in the country, but this thread has kept me sane!!! I am very lucky that my usual hairdresser is fab at hair ups and is doing my hair on the day, and I know someone that does make up very reasonable so I have booked her in aswell.
I still have to sort out thank you gifts, I have ideas we just need to order them. I also need to have my dress altered- Im only 5 ft so it needs taken up, and it also needs to be cleaned. Once I have the rsvps I can then start on things like the name place cards, table plan etc. I also need to get the younger bridesmaid and flower girl some shoes- theres lots more to do but I cant think what!!
What have you got planned so far? Whats your day going to be like?
I went to H Samuels to get the pearl studs I linked yesterday, and they only had one pair and they had a little scuff on them so they have ordered me a pair in.0 -

- it was the date we met, 17th July 1999.
I think your 'student pub' wedding sounds brill - and very personal to you. :T (Which in my opinion is the most important thing about the whole thing - rather than following traditions and wedding rules.)smithkinson wrote: »What time is everyone having food? Hello everyone!
I have a quick question for everyone - has any one been to 'Go Ape' before?
I am going on Saturday for someone's hen do and am trying to decide which shoes to wear... options:
1. walking boots - quite heavy and not very flexible (so prob not great for climbing) but got a good grip on them
2. Old trainers - doesn't matter about getting muddy but not much grip (I use them for Zumba)
3. New trainers - good grip and comfy but I don't really want to get them muddy!
Or I have some little plimsoll things but not sure if they will offer enough support.
Any advice welcomed please!
On a more weddingy note, my sister bought her bridesmaid shoes today, mu mum bought a fascinator (lol) and I bought and dropped off the fabric for the cravats!
xxThs signature is out of date because I'm too lazy to update it...0
