Flapjacks

Sorry,folks there's no such thing:(
I make 4 dozen flapjacks every week for my school tuck shop. The reason they taste so good is the butter. You can use a low-fat spread designed for baking but they will not have the characteristic rich flapjacky taste.Buttermilk certainly won't work.
Flapjacks are just oats stuck together with sugar and butter. If you're worried about fat save them for special occasions.
BTW you can use buttermilk very successfully in muffins, scones or bread;)0 -
Although flapjacks will be unhealthy anyway as the sugar content is as bad as the fat content they may be a little less unhealthy if half the butter were substituted for an equivalent amount of ground linseed.
3 Tablespoons ground Flax Seed = 1 Tablespoon Margarine, butter or cooking oil.
Substitute for all or some of the fat depending on the recipe. To substitute for all of the fat with flax seed, increase liquid by 75% as ground flax absorbs liquid. Baked goods brown more quickly.
I haven't actually tried this so would welcome a post back from someone who has.My weight loss following Doktor Dahlqvist' Dietary Program

Becareful if you have a nut allergy though. I have one and I can't tolerate Flax Seed - it makes me feel sick. Didn't know until I tried some flapjack made with it. I'm quite lucky in that sense, m allergy could give me a worse reaction .
One way I got around flapjack when I was doing weight watchers was to use lowfat margarine and cut the pieces small so they ended up being 1pt each.0 -
Looks like it's going to be full fat flap jacks then. Thanks everyone.0

These (from the index, posted by Curry Queen) claim to be low fat - although I'm not sure thats technically correct, they seem lower than average and are absolutely scrummy. She doesn't toast the coconut and seeds, but I do and it makes it utterly sublime:
Low Fat Cereal Bars
1 cup rolled oats
1 cup Rice Krispies
2/3 cup chopped apricots
3 tbsp roasted sunflower seeds (I don't bother toasting them)
1/4 cup toasted coconut (I don't toast it)
1/4 cup brown sugar
2 tbsp oil
3 tbsp honey
2 tbsp peanut butter
1 tbsp vanilla extract
1. Melt oil, honey, peanut butter in microwave just until easy to mix up, watch carefuly, probably 20 seconds or so.
2. Mix in vanilla.
3. Mix all ingredients together and press down well into 8" square tin.
4. Bake at 350F/180C/gas4 for 20 minutes.

This is probably a thick question but is Rice Krispies the same as Rice Bubbles?Don't worry about the world coming to an end today. It's already tomorrow in Australia.0

Do rice bubbles go 'snap crackle and pop'?
Oh - just found it on Kelloggs Au website - yes, one and the same thing.0 -
Thanks Trow. I have some Rice Bubbles in the cupboard that have been lurking for a while. Will use them up on the Cereal Bars. It's odd the different names isn't it. Just wanted to make sure.Don't worry about the world coming to an end today. It's already tomorrow in Australia.0

I have used this recipe recently and they were lovely (yum yum)
100g margarine
100g brown sugar
50g honey
100g porridge oats
100g muesli (I used Aldi Benifit Tropical Cereal as we had a box lurking - its like special k and rice crispies mixed with tropical fruit & raisens, I crushed it a bit in my hands in the bowl)
1. melt the margarine, sugar & honey
2. Mix together oats & muesli, pour over melted mixture & mix well. Spread into 7" greased baking tin.
3. Bake at 190c/375f/gas mark 5 for 20 - 25 mins or until golden brown.
4. Remove form oven mark into squares then ,leave to cool completely.0
