I made some flapjacks last week and they were hard as nails, infact I broke two back teeth trying to scoff them,it hasn`t put me off.
The kids didn`t eat them so I couldn`t waste them could I?Debt Free Date:10/09/2007 :j :money:0 -
My favourite recipe is from the school canteen - they made such nice ones, I asked for the recipre, which was for a quantity of 16 tins, so I needed to scale it down a bit!!
14oz porridge oats
8oz butter (or stork)
4oz sugar
4oz syrup - weigh it out (I usually use 5oz. Dip spoon into hot water to stop syrup sticking to it.)
Melt the last three, and mix into oats.
Put into tin (about 8inches by 11? never measured it)
Cook at 170 C for 15 minutes. Mark into fingers immediately then leave to cool.
Try not to eat the whole lot yourself (the only difficult bit)
Just wanted to say that I made these yesterday and they are fab!!! I did get a bit scared by the amount of porridge oats it used, but they filled my baking tin nicely. I used the hard story margarine, and they were perfect - not a tough and hard version, but a lovely soft and chewy one, just how I like!

I have a bit of a glut of oats so have decided to make some flapjack but my recipie states demerara sugar and I dont have any in. Can I substitute half dark brown sugar and half castor sugar ? which I do have in. The recipie also states margerine but I only have butter - will that be alright ? also I have a lot of dried fruit in aswell so can I put a bit of that in too ?
Thanks for your helpIm trying to get back into oldstyle again

Hi, oops!€
Butter - absolutely! We don't have margarine any more, so I use butter now, and the taste is soooo much better.
Sugar - won't matter too much which you use. Demerara is advised as it adds flavour and colour, but white/brown mixed will be fine.
You can add dried fruit, and cherries, if you have them. We also use chocolate chips, but wait until the mixture is cool, or the choc melts. It still tastes nice, but doesn't have the discrete chips.

well we made it BUT it kind of fell apart when I tried to take it out of the tin so I think it may end up being a topping for yoghut:cool: Official DFW Nerd Club Member #37 Debt free Feb 07 :cool:0

I've made flapjacks and a chocolate cake as well today, my flapjacks are just cooling and then i have to cut them
I made chewy ones - hope they turn out ok as i've never made them before, but if the disaster that is supposed to be a chocolate cake is anything to go by i dont hold out much hope !!*Spendi*

Leave them to cool completely in the tin. Then invert the tin and bang on a hard surface, it should come out in one piece (provided you have greased the tin first). Then cut into bars0
