The sugar is important
As a seasoned flapkacker I can confirm that Jay Jay is right. You need the sugar, the syrup is more for flavour I think - you can use black treacle instead.
The most important thing about flapjacks in my opinion is to use butter I see from your sig that you agree Tom.0 -

I made smashing's microwave flapjacks on friday evening. Put choc chips in and they were scoffed pretty quickly!
Did have trouble finding a dish to microwave them in that wasn't
a) metal
b) square which stopped the turntable turning!! DOH!
Ended up using the lid of my pyrex caserole dish - just the job!working on clearing the clutterDo I want the stuff or the space?0 -
Here's another one, this came from my Nan so is well tried and tested!
Flapjack
1)6oz Margarine
2)5oz Sugar
3)1 tbsp Golden syrup
4)8 oz Porridge Oats
5)Vanilla Essence
Melt 1, 2 & 3 over a low heat. Add 4 & 5.
Cook for 15 minutes at Gas 4 / 1800 -
Wonder if anyone can help, Ive tried making flapjack half a dozen times ive tried greasing the pan ive tried baking parchment ive tried greaseproof paper ive tried greasing the greaseproof paper and it still STICKS
and i end up peeling paper off the bottom and then most of it ends up in the bin ...

did you wait until it was completely cooled before cutting/removing from the dish? That's what I did wrong the first timeworking on clearing the clutterDo I want the stuff or the space?0
