They are obviously promoting this offer again at Asda: handing out little leaflets at the door and giving them with receipts. I told the woman giving them out that I thought the 'excluded' things on the receipts which they reckon they can't compare (fresh leeks was one example I had recently) was patronising to customers, treating us as if we're stupid. I asked her to feed that back to the 'powers that be'. I'll carry on doing my main shopping there as I think it's best value for money but I think the 10% thing is a bit of a con in some respects.

A bit of a con that results in my saving even more money on my shopping - the sort of con I like. I cannot believe some people's negative response to this, Asda don't have to do this and the comparison is totally independent of Asda so it's not really their fault what is excluded. So just take the free money!

  • Each week we put all special offers from Asda in one little trolley, and our main shop in the other and pay separately. Usually we can get 5-8 pounds back this way :-)

I've stopped trying to manipulate best results by weighing special offers up in price comparison and taking advantage - I could 'get back' £5+ each week by doing it, but I was spending money I probably would not otherwise have done on junky stuff that I don't normally buy and really didn't have room for anyway. Now I just stick to what I've always bought and am happy with just knowing that when my receipt does generate a voucher (most weeks, actually - around £1-£3) it's because I've saved on stuff I was going to buy anyway.

Yesterday's haul was particularly satisfying. £47 worth of a mix of Smart Price, Yellow Stickered and own brand stuff, plus a couple of branded items - not one thing I wouldn't normally have bought and all shoved in the same trolley. This generated a voucher for £5.30 this morning. I realise I could probably have inflated the figure a bit by paying for special offers separately to make the main shop look even more expensive in comparison to other supermarkets, or by boosting my initial spend with purchases that I knew to be cheaper elsewhere but would have been unlikely to buy otherwise, but time and space have got their price too and I seem to have a bit more of both since I stopped faffing about trying to beef up the weekly voucher.

I love the price guarantee thing and don't see it as 'a bit of a con' at all for people who aren't sucked into buying more in an attempt to widen the gap between what they're spending and what they would spend if they were just as reckless in a cheaper supermarket. For the rest, I don't suppose Asda are one bit unhappy either at 'giving them back' a percentage of the wedge they would not normally have spent there.

This is what the t & c's say:

I've made two successful claims so have two vouchers; can I use them both in one shop?

Yes just present them to the checkout operator to be discounted from your shopping

Just to let you know I have used 3 in one go and they have taken them off my shopping :)

Yes, it does, can make a big difference. Think about it. (See post above from Ida Notion.)

  • I've had 'receipts not found' messages on the price guarantee system for a few days now, and the iphone app. Anyone else having this problem?
