Cheri I know nowt about cars but good luck with it ! xxNothing is so fatiguing as the eternal hanging on of an uncompleted task. William James0

Goodness that does sound like a good deal Cheri!
Have a think about it. What's 6 month's tax - £103? Plus an MOT (£40 ish), full service (£80), that's £223 already. Plus delivering it to you free of charge - how much fuel would that cost you to collect it otherwise? £50? More I suspect?
So even if you pay the full price (Was it £3400?), you're already up £273. So you could pay the RAC, plus have a bit of spare, and save a whole load of messing around. However, sounds very much like you trust him?
Gosh, I don't even know where I'm going with that! :rotfl: Sounds like you should just go for it, it could be with you very soon! Instinct is great I think in these circumstances, you can usually spot someone dodgy a mile off (or 150 miles off :rotfl:)
However, if you'd feel better waiting til Mr C had seen it, or the RAC, then perhaps you should do that??
Oh dear, I fear I've been no help at all! I got to the point with ours where I was absolutely sick of looking (and I didn't even DO most of the looking!), so I would probably just go with it - although then again I couldn't imagine buying a car without seeing it first (but we'd be buying one in a much worse condition than yours and from an individual not a dealer, so always worth looking!)
Ok, I'll toddle off, I'm probably neither use nor ornament in this discussion!0 -
Oh no Cheery dont toddle off you are very much use. The thing is you read my mind. I am soooooooooo tempted to just phone him up and make an offer and ask him to deliver. I wish Mr C was here to reign me in. I do believe in instincts and my instincts feel quite good on this. BUT I have never bought a car before as such. I have only owned one and I bought that off my best friend so knew it would be fine.
I am just not an impulsive person so whilst one part of my brain is saying OH JUST DO IT, the other is screaming NO NO NO.
I have never done anything risky in my life and I am thinking What the heck So what if it all goes wrong!!!!!!!Some days there aren't any trumpets, just lots of dragons. Courage doesn't always roar. But then the rational me shouts NO NO NO

So, let me ask you this - what happens if it all DOES go wrong? Would you have some kind of warranty? What kind of comeback do you have with the garage if they sell you something sh*te? What about the RAC thing - sounds like that would give you piece of mind? I'm guessing they wouldn't take responsibility if anything went wrong, but I'm also guessing they'd know far more about it when they looked at it than you would!
So - perhaps you need to send the RAC tomorrow (if you can), then see? Can you afford the £195 if they check it and then say no?0 -
Thanks Cheery for being my little voice of reason. Well the £195 would be a good investment, but if they say dont buy it would just mean less to spend on the next one. I forgot to mention that there is a 6 month warranty on the car for any major faults. If it all went wrong? Well the worse things that I can consider is
- it is stolen and I lose all of my money
- it turns out to be an insurance write off and I cant get it insured (i asked straight out re cat c and d)
- it turns out to have hp outstanding and it gets repossessed and I lose all of my money
- It falls apart and I lose my money
- It has faults and I have to spend money on it (which I will not have as this would wipe my savings out)

You need to ask more questions... like when was the MOT done, were there amy advisories on it and if so have these been carried out. If the garage have serviced it and are prepared to offer a 6 month warranty (get them to specify exactly what would be covered) then an RAC check is a waste of money. Its not going to show up anything that wasn't picked up on a recent MOT.
Further questions should involve asking the tread depth remaining on the tyres and most importantly its 9 years old. Has it ever had its cam belt (timing belt) changed because these are usually due at 60-80,000 miles or at 8-10 years of age. If it hasn't been done and you can persuade the garage to do it and deliver it then I'd go for it without any hesitation. If it has been done recently then the vehicle has been well maintiained and I'd definately grab it with both hands. If on the other hand it hasn't been done then I'd offer £500 (or more) less than the asking price on the basis that this is what its going to cost you to get it done.Saving for a Spinning Wheel and other random splurges : £183.500 -
Good advice there from both Cheery & M2M I would say. Re offers (if one were being cheeky, which one should be, as the dealer will be expecting it) I would suggest telling him that you really like the car, are really impressed with the service he is offering, but that your budget is 3k so you were hoping to get something for around that really....then go quiet and let him talk. You need to hold your nerve at this point - remember he WILL be expecting it, and WILL have priced the car accordingly. I would expect you to be able to get the car for no more than £3200. This is exactly what I did when we bought MrEH's Citroen C3 (03 plate, but high mileage) which was priced at £3500 in August 2009 - we got it for £3200 in the end. Oh, and once the deal is done remember to ask him to pop half a tank of diesel in it for you as well, oretty please. Don't ask, don't get!
You mentioned worrying about the insurance, but surely one of the photos shows a registration? In which case, pop it into a comparison site (meerkats?) and if there is a problem you'll find out pretty fast! Seemples!
The dealership sound excellent - the offer to deliver to you is an impressive one, although inevitably you have to look at the viewpoint that the car is doing them no good sat on the forecourt so the relatively low cost of losing someone for a few hours to get it to you.

Oh good advice there Moo. He said that he would put a new MOT on it. He has all the previous service history and MOT docs so it should be easy to answer those questions. Never thought about the tyre depth and the cam belt would not have crossed my mind. Although it is only 6 years old and only done 54000 miles so do you think if it hasnt been done it would still be worth trying to get him to do it when the service is done?

Re him putting a new MOT on it - several people offered to do this for us when we were trying to buy one - what happens if he does the MOT and finds something wrong with it?! Does that mean he'll actually fix it too, in with the cost? Because it sounds like it should!
But good advice from Moo and EH there - well done everyone! :T0
