  • I've had autos and they are much more luxurious to drive, you have a spare hand to wave at the peasant as you drive by :p.

That Berlingo sounds just like dads and FIL, came in on P-ex so due to age needed to be moved on quickly hence the price. One owner is a bonus, rear suspension work may only be something like the rubber bushes or an anti roll link bar. My Mazda has had 7 of these over the years but its now done 140k and they are only about £40 each so not drastic. Try ringing a citroen dealer and speak to parts or service - some can be very helpful especially if you say that once you buy it you will be using their services :D

Ours is a 2002 1.9 diesel berlingo Cheri (although with 144000 miles on the clock :rotfl: so it cost £1000 :rotfl:)

I'm afraid I have no idea about the rear suspension - can go and look through the service history later if it's useful to you?? It's actually the same engine (apparently) as our LDV van was - I wouldn't describe it as 'noisy', but then I'm used to a rattly old van, so no idea really. You can certainly have a decent conversation in it while driving along the motorway at any rate, which is an improvement on our van! :D

Good luck. Thing I like about ours is no central locking, no electric windows etc, so less to go wrong (but Pippi has a 2002 (petrol) one, and hers has all those things, so depends on the model). We've never managed to blow the dashboard fuse by using the windscreen wipers :)

Oh I do like all of this car discussion - sad as I am.

Blah its Tuesday. Only another week to go of being at home alone. Although the week is shaping up nicely. Assuming my hire car is delivered on time I have a session to deliver in Cardigan tomorrow to a bunch of sixth formers. I like Cardigan and there is a well known supermarket there for which I have points so I might even wander in and get some shopping as I am passing anyway. Then to North Wales (Colwyn Bay) to be precise on Friday to do a sessions for a lot of women making a difference. Should be fun.

So plans for today include, teleconference with my boss and then my staff and then my boss again. Big changes afoot in work so who knows whats going to hit the fan today. I must remember to phone and pay the mortgage. Once that is out of the account and a couple of other bills I will be left with enough to last me to the end of the week. However I can claim expenses for lunches on Wednesday and Friday and an evening meal and snacks on Friday as I will be out of the house for over 10 hours. Although I have a habit of not stopping at shops to buy lunch, take my own with me and then I cant claim anything. So this week I must do a shop or cafe lunch as a little treat to myself.

Right, I guess that sitting here isnt getting things done. Best go and switch the works computer on.

Ok I have done some research.

The Berlingo that I have seen is a 2002 with only 54000 miles on the clock and one lady owner. It is in a garage that I know of and I know somebody who has bought a car from there. I came across it on Autotrader. They are asking £3400 for it. A check on various sites is pricing this at low price of £4098 mid £4821 and highest at £4996 as a national average. So that seems to be a good price that he is asking. Not sure if there would be room for negotiation on this. Hmmm.
Also the reviews I have read suggest that the 1.9 diesel is noisy. Using the windscreen washers can blow the dashboard fuse but more worryingly that the rear suspension needs work from 50K. Given that I will be having a 10 stone dog in the back I am wondering if this would be the right kind of car.
He does also have a volkswagon Touran 2003 with 67000 miles on the clock at £5400 - now I am getting ridiculous arent I :)

Insurance on the Touran might put you off. Everything about mine is fab apart from the £400 a year insurance that allows me 10k miles a year on the basis that OH and I both have the maximum permissable no claims bonus. Theres tons of space in the back even when both dogs are in it and I haven't noticed any bounce or groaning of the suspension with 18 stone of dog, 2 adults, 2 children, 3 bikes and a fully laden mahoosive roof box the size of the roof crammed to capacity.

    The price is good

Mine has done well over 130k and no suspension work ever done!

I've driven both the deisel and the petrol one and they are both fine, my pals is a bit noisier but you don't really notice it.

    Parts are cheap enough

My one is a 2002 petrol not deisel smaller engine (1.4)

    Goodluck with it all :)

Well it all sounds lovely and it looks lovely too BUT I have had my no claims reduced to 1 year and so far the cheapest quote I have for a berlingo is £401 fully comprehensive and that annoyed me as it is only a group 5. Not looked into insurance on the Touran though.
Another thing that I noticed is that it is 6 gears and as Mr C was constantly trying to put my poor fiesta into 6th that could be agood thing.

Thanks Pippi. The price is certainly good as far as I can see. But then I also think it is because it is in an area where there are lots of competitive garages. Around here I have only found a 2002 at £3700 with 86000 on the clock or older ones with over 100000 on the clock for not much less. Oh the joys of living in a place that takes at least 2 and half hours to get anywhere!!!!

Right I have spoken to the garage where the car is here

He said that they still have the car. He is more than happy for a full RAC inspection to be done and he has space on site for it to be done at any time they wish to call. He is open to offers following the inspection. And is willing to take payment over the phone. Debit card free of charge CC 1.9% charge.
It was taken in part exchange from somebody who has bought from him before. One lady owner. He has full service history and MOT certificates. I asked about Insurance Cat C or D, he said he does not deal in those kind of cars, just part exchanges that he does full checks on. I think that I offended him even asking, that or it was amusement in his voice.
He said that within the price he provides a full service, MOT and 6 months tax. He is not aware of any suspension issues on the car but he would check out all the documentation to see if there has been any previously. He also said that he would deliver the car to me free of charge :eek:when I explained that I am in Wales and need to consider somebody bringing it down, subject to all checks. It is over 150 miles each way! The garage has been trading for as long as I can remember as I have a friend who bought from him many years ago.

Can you guess where I am going with this?

I have checked with RAC they want £195 to do an essentials plus check which includes mechanical and cosmetic checks as well as checking HPI and insurance databases. I can pay £19.99 to do the latter checks to check if ever written off or o/s credit. So my question is. Is it worth paying for the RAC check? If I was cheeky what should I offer him (given that he is doing the service MOT and tax and is willing to deliver it)? And based on the information I have researched it does already seem to be a fair price.Should I hold my horses and get Mr C to go on Monday assuming that it will still be there?

Oh dear me decisions, decisions. I am trying not to get over excited. BUT as I have just been told that my hire car isnt coming tomorrow due to a mix up and I have had to cancel my sessions I am really fed up of not being able to just do my job without relying on other people.
