  • Wibblehead - great post and very useful to a novice like me and my daughter. DD being given the phone after school today to have a play with so no doubt she will find out how to change the home page etc.

I have heard bad things about the Orange customer service but they were really good yesterday when I rang to enquire about the £10 top up. Was worried that I had got it wrong as the phone seems just too good for £69. However they sorted it all out and transfered my DD's old number and new credit over to the new sim card and it all seems to be working today with the credit and balance added from her old phone sim. Spoke to a very nice chap who could not have been more helpful.

The Nokia i had was an N80

Which was one of the first smart phones, easiest way to think of it is to see if programs (other than simple Java) can run on the phone.

From your example, the n80 could run programs like TomTom, the LG Cookie cannot.

  • Just an update to say unfortunately nothing but problems with the white SF I got for daughter. Simply cannot log onto wifi or internet although have no problems with other laptops/computers in the house. Spent 1 hour 30 yesterday with 2 different people in Orange technical but they could not sort it and in the end left me hanging on and cut me off when they said they were going to ask someone else! Dread to think what those calls cost me as it was a number starting 07.

Not at all impressed after the good customer service I had the other day. So the phone will be going back (within 7 day period and faulty) - I will be emailing and faxing them today as the returns is closed at the weekend.

Very disappointed for dd but will now look around for something else. I know the phone works fine for many but I must have got a dud and have lost confidence.

What network is your daughter on? Hubby had to go in and change some settings in our phone to get our internet and wifi to work. I can give you info about tmobile settings but will have to ask hubby about any other network. Can't guarantee he will know the answers but he might be able to tell you where to find them.

I've had mine for a few weeks now and love it. I've put another app on for my home screen called launcherpro and I have a lovely little programme called tasker that automatically turns on my wifi when it knows I'm almost home. I have a great radio app called TuneIn and use it as an alarm in the morning. It's also got me in to sokoban again - love that game! I love the widgets I have too and have easy access to lots of apps from my home screen. I wonder how I did without it now - such good value as I couldn't justify spending more on a phone. Oh yes and now have audible on it too! Oh yes and myphoneexplorer and so that I can sync with my pc. Cardiotrainer is excellent for keeping a track of your walks! Or if you fancy it theres is My Tracks. I got a similar case to the one from ebay and it fits a treat and keeps the phone safe! Oh yes and also with tasker I have it set so that when I'm driving and someone phones or texts it will automatically text the person to advise I'm driving and will get back to them asap!

Just realised how many times I said Oh yes! I may be easily pleased though as I've not had a smart phone before! I do really love this little phone! :D

I am this excited about the SF too although I only have a few games apps so far, going to look for this tasker one though, that sounds excellent.
My only gripe is the battery life, it didn't last the whole day at work even though I wasnt using it.

that is my concern about any new phone I might get as I'm used to an old Nokia 6310i that the battery lasts weeks on !

You can have the phone last for days by turning off 3G and data (only use them then needed) turning off GPS (only use when needed), set the display to a reasonable brightness level (there's no need for it to be 100% all the time), turn off apps syncing the back ground as these take the phone out of sleep mode. Turn off wifi (only needs to be on when you want it) and when the wifi is on set it to never sleep - it uses more power constantly sleeping and waking then it does being on.

richmndhampton court, there is a fix for your wi-fi. Just google it or go to modaco forums. I,m a bit of a technophobe myself, but I have been researching the SF, as I may get one for myself. Quite a lot of discussion and info about it on hotukdeals too
I,m so stupid that I forgot the mnemonic

    Hi.

Had a word with hubby yesterday after I posted and he says he only knows info for tmobile (because that's what we are both on) He got the info from the modaco forums.
Having just done a quick search on modaco I found this info on APN settings (which is what you need to change to get internet working)

    http://android.modaco.com/content/zte-blade-blade-modaco-com/318970/access-point-name-apn-settings-for-uk-mobile-network-providers/

If that doesn't work try searching the forums again or asking a question on the forums, hubby says they are really helpful on there.

Hope that helps or at least sets you on the right track to getting the info you need :)
