Hi Guys I've just been reading through your posts laughing at some and sympathising with others.
Maybe I can offer any support, if so then I'm happy to.

I've been off the fags for 13 months now with champix for the first 4 weeks and its the most amazing thing you will do.
For me, the most wonderful thing was the way food tasted as soon as my taste buds recovered!

Keep at it and you will do great, just don't ever let yourself get bored!!

    Hi Guys,

I have been reading your posts on here for the last weeks or so - I have been thinking of giving up for a while now, but was really scared about how I would feel - I have now decided to go ahead with it after reading what you guys think and hearing your encouragement. So last night at 7.30pm had my last ciggy and have decided to quit!
Well im sure im not the only one but I was thinking my partner doesnt smoke, only 2 or 3 friends smoke, I always smoke outside at home never in the house surely this cant be that hard.....
How wrong I am? I did give up over 3 years ago for about a year and all I can remember from then was always thinking about having a ciggy - I dont really remember it being sooo hard but im sure it was.
I was fine today until lunch time as thats the usual reason for me to go on breaks so I can have a fag...and i got home and thought i cant do it - had a good chat with my partner (who has given up for around 6/7years now) and that helped, then I got back to work and was fine until now and Im getting the same unnervy feelings that i cant do it, will i be missing out?, what happens when i see these people who do smoke?
I need some encouragment - I really thought it would be at least a day before i started doubting what I had done so I am quite disappointed in myself - as my partner said isnt it crazy how much that little white stick has all the control!!
Anything that any of you guys think will help - please put it this way
    Thanks for all your help
    Anna :)

Welcome, Anna. I found the easiest way was to say "I'll just . . . and then I'll think again." Most times by the time I had done whatever . . . was, I was OK again. I didn't allow myself to think any farther ahead for the first few days. Are you using any NRT? It helped me at the beginning.

Hang on in there! Drink water, juice or eat fruit. Sometimes our signals are mixed and it may be hunger, not a craving.

Don't forget that smokers are a minority in your social circle so you are not going to be isolated.

Read the first post on this thread and have a look at some of the links. You'll find plenty of reasons to get yourself free.

We're all rooting for you and there is usually someone around to give you a virtual hug if that helps. You can do it, I know you can. :)

As for the little white stick having control, he's just behaving like a toddler in a tantrum. Speak firmly to him and he'll eventually learn who is really in control. Then he'll leave you alone. Honest, I've been there, done that, still earning the T-shirt. :rotfl:
But how can you know what you want till you get what you want and you see if you like it?

    Hello Everyone!

Im Kate and I've been lurking for about a week and a half!
I finally decided last Thursday I would have my last fag on my dinner at work and then pop over the the stop smoking centre opposite and get quitting.

I'm now on day 6/7 and using a mixture of patches and lozenges sp.

I have been couching up some unsightly things but I do have cold at the mo so not sure if its a mix of the two at present.
I can breathe alot easier and am loving not stinking like an ashtray.

The reason I decided to quit was I was getting worried and paranoid everytime I had one I wondered if I would be the statistic that gets cancer or another smoking related illness. I'm getting married this year and I know my fella hated me smoking but he was never pushy about it, I thought to myself I could do so much with the extra cash and at the same time hopefully live longer and get to enjoy being married for a very long time rather than die early thanks to the ciggies!

I am a very stubborn person, some people may think this is a bad quality to posess but for me its worked wonders, When my friends and family asked me to stop, I wouldn't, cos I was stubborn, but now I've decided to do it for myself, I'm too stubborn to now give in!

Anyway, just thought I would introduce myself cos Ive been reading this thread with interest and some of the tips have really helped. The Man I saw at the stop smoking place was really helpful too and said I had a lot going for me as my partner didn't smoke, I very rarely drink, I didn't smoke indoors etc. I thought I was going mad the other night as I have been having some very wierd dreams (even though i'm only on the 16hr patch) but nevertheless I have carried on going and am all booked in for my first check tomorrow where my Carbon Monoxide levels will be tested and I'll get a pat on the back!

Again thanks for all your help, I will post back tomorrow after my check up xx

Hello guys and welcome to the thread! Congratulations on deciding you want to give up!
This thread is a huge support system that I could not not do without (after only 2 days!) as its support from real people and real smokers who are honest in how many they smoked, and their triggers!
Everyone is very friendly and very understanding. I wish you both all the luck in the world :)

Good afternoon all. How is everyone getting on?
It has been a strange day for me. I was up early - out of the house to the hospital and I forgot to put a patch on. All was fine, with only a few times between appointments where I thought of smoking.
I returned home and decided to cut my patch in half as half the day had gone, and since then - BLUMMIN HECK its hard! Its like its worse with the patch on. I am really struggling, even when keeping busy its still all I can think of.
I wont cave in today as I do feell more determined, but if this was yesterday I so would have caved!
Anyone know why its harder with a patch on? Or is it my freaky hormonal body? LOL

Baby is fine and is engaged ready to pop out - I will be having a doctor led birth due to other complications and in for 2 nights at least - so all is well :)

How is everyone else getting on? xxx

Well done Mat, on both quitting for that amount of time AND for putting it in the Title Bar! Get used to the rain though there's plenty mote to come, though I do sympathise with folk on their days off.

Hi Kate and Anna and a very warm welcome to the thread! Thanks to you both for letting us know a bit about yourselves, it helps us all to help you.

Kate, you have made a wonderful start and have a lot going for you to be able to take it a day at a time and continue on to be free of it for all of your married life - what a joy it would be to free yourself from all the worry connected to those 'orrible little white things! I think the coughing up such rubbish (quite natural) and feeling as though you have a cold are all to do with the quitting too, as much as you're possibly not feeling so good, it's a good thing and is helping you get things going inside to, cleansing if you like. You say you've been having some very weird dreams and that is often what comes with the change, but if you're using patches at night time, then that could be making it worse. Most patch users don't use them at night, but pop one on first thing in the morning. All in all the cessation Nurse/chap is right in all he says, you everything going for you and have a good chance of being successful with quitting and that would be wonderful for you and your husband to be! I've sent you a PM, keep it and refer to it as and when necessary. Good luck in bring the stubbornness into play in a great way, all the best in good CM reading too. See you tomorrow and well done on turning your life round! X

Back to you, Anna. Don't worry about being frightened of what you'll feel now you're stopping, though it's one of the most natural feelings that come with all of on starting out. I wouldn't mind betting that you had the exact feelings before, but you possibly took it more in your stride then, youth also can play a part. Often feelings of "I must quit" make the fears even greater than feelings of a casual "I think I'll quit", pressure's what I'm talking about, Anna and it really messes us up. Have a look at the PM and see what I mean about the friendship part - as it's NO friend of yours! What happens to others who DO smoke....they worry themselves sick about how much longer they'll be able to risk smoking and getting smoking-related illnesses, they get in awful states when they hear the word cancer...but not half as much as they do when another of their friends dies due to it! They so often spend precious sleeping hours being awake and frightened, mindful about every fag they have! They're so envious of friends who've quit and are starting to be in control of their lives rather than being controlled by fags and all the harm they bring with nicotine and all the chemicals they contain. Try not to analyse giving up, Anna, think more about all that you'll gain. Move ahead and get these things out of your life. It sounds as though you have a wonderful partner, lean on him and let him give you much of the support you need, we'll provide the rest along with other quitters. Be strong Anna, be focused. Keep chatting to us, we really can help. Best wishes, Sue x

Hi Andy, good to see you over here! Congratulations on having finished with the fags!!!! Another Champix success then, well done..and thanks so much for giving some incentive to those who are going through their journeys. Thank you.

Hi SOS and what a happy...happy..happy non-smoker you are now!!! :D You sound as though you bless the day you stopped, it's a delight to read posts such as yours, thanks so much for that and - very well done!!! :T:T

Stay strong everyone! You're all doing wonderfully!

Hi Sally, how very odd indeed. Why not take the patch off again and see how you go, but don't keep it off if things get really worse. Try.sipping water and having plenty of fruit. I'd love to know how it works without one though as it just could be all to do with hormones.

I'm thrilled to know your little treasure's doing well, and at least you know things are sorted for you with the hospital on the day. Enjoy it all Sally, there isn't an experience like it, all sooooooo worth it!!!! :DWell done in getting yourself so healthy for now and for the rest of you life!

  • Hi Everyone Hope your all doing well and having a good-smoke-free-day :)

:shhh: Don't tell Nico this, but last night I went to a shop I have never been to before and bought 20 cigarettes :naughty:THEN I remembered I don't smoke so I asked for my money back. The really horrible shopkeeper said 'No, you smoke!'. I argued back saying 'NO, YOU GIVE ME MY MONEY BACK NOW! I DON'T WANT THEM'. We argued and argued. I stood up for myself then I threw them at his head :rotfl: and ran out of the shop ;)

I will say now this is the first dream I have had since giving up..I bet you are all about to throw your laptops at me for not saying it was a dream in the first place, I know I'm very :naughty: BUT I did stand up for myself in the cigarette department and have ago at the 'nasty' cigarette seller ;)

I am sending you all beers and coffee to apologies ;)
    :beer::beer::coffee::coffee::coffee::coffee::beer::beer:

On a serious note I have a friend in work who has quit (9 days) but is finding it very hard at the moment. I said to have a look at some post on here as it's the best thing I have read in my 'journey'. I really do hope he does take a look at all your post and keep on his journey to a better life..

    AZ xx
