Hi Atom and a very warm welcome! Apologies, I nearly missed you as we're now on a new page!
Could the palpitations be due to excitement at having stopped perhaps?? Also, what means of stopping are you using? If you're using an NRT check what it says on the directions.
We can get all sorts of alterations to the body after having suddenly stopping putting such a lot of rubbish into us, little wonder the body kicks up a bit. To be sure why not pop into your Dr tomorrow and have a word with him/her, it's always good to be reassured or it may concern you more..in which case the palpitations will still keep up.
Congratulations on having said goodbye to smoking! It's about the best thing you could ever do for yourself.A warm welcome to MSE.

Hi Sue-UU
I always give up cold turkey i have never once tried anything to help me give up - see i can go for 6 months without them but the moment i get stressed it's hard to not have one - swings and roundabouts.
The palps just came on the last little while and have done so a couple of times i came off before but they kept me awake the other night so was a wee bit worried even though my doc done some tests ECG etc and said all is fine, I'm in good shape but one of my cousins had an enlarged left ventricle so it makes me a bit worriedi was hoping this could just be due to giving up smoking which am sure it is

day 1:
thank for the email sue-uu, and Dundeedoll, will read and re read all the links etc. Have been down town and stocked up on chewing gum and polos (24 packs for £2) as am a right chocolate freak and struggle with my weight anyway, have my vitamins bought and also covonia cough sweets, lots of juicy oranges and weight watchers crisps. After doing the shopping i sat in the car park and got dashboard wipes and cleaned the car, emptied the ashtray and found this the probably hardest bit of the day so far, not having one after being shopping. Have a Cracker of a sore head though which is unusual for me, but will just have a good drink of water. Like the tips about showering more often so have gone and bought new puffy thing and treated myself to more expensive shampoo than i would normally buy.skintbint x

Atom .. i had the Ecg done too. i was getting palpitations prior to giving up, went to decaf tea and coffee was still getting them. Then cut the ciggies out that reduced them immensly i still get them but not as much. i have noticed that if i am stressed or if i have a lot sweet stuff chocolate etc (chocolate has caffeine in i was told ) then i notice them more.
Hope it works out ok for youThanks to all :A

Good to hear you always go cold turkey, Atom, that you've had a check up with your Dr too; next time you're woken with them try to relax yourself from your toes up to your head. It sounds to me as though your concern for your Cousin is playing on your mind and because of family connections you still think there may be something similar going on with you.
Do try hard to push it out and tell yourself "I'm ok, the Dr said so after I had the tests, so...whatever am I worrying about?" Cut out coffee and possibly tea and see if not having caffeine has any affect. However, if your Cousin's health worries you too much, go back to your Dr and explain about his/her problem and ask bluntly if it could happen or be likely to be happening to you?!
I take note of what you've said about previous quit attempts, but it seems as though you always re-start whe you're under stress - BUT - lighting up will only cause more stress, not stop it!! Work your way through whatever it is that's causing the stress and you'll find that you can get by without starting again. I had this talk from a Hospital Dr years ago and, to be honest, I didn't believe him!I sincerely wish I could go back and thank him for his wise words as he was so right!!! Sadly, he moved onto another Hospital, I really do hope others are taking note of him.
Try and sort our your worries, Atom, it's only by doing so that you'll be able to move on. All very best wishes.
Sue xx
Very well said caracara! It's never long before you can help others, well done!

Good to see you back again, skintbint. We all have our difficult times like yours after shopping. Switch your mind straight onto something totally different; what you're going to do next, jobs to be done when you get home. Pop a CD on, remind yourself of beautiful memories..a last holiday. Anything like that will help distract you, so keep right on doing so when you have 'moments', it's the way to win!
Well done on drinking water to help with your headache though it may well be stress/excitement on stopping, so again try something to relax you ie knitting...putting a face pack on.
Best wishes skintbint, you CAN do this!!!

Morning All!
Just checking in again. Friday night was a test....... which I passed!!! Had a couple of drinks with DH at home. I knew there was no fags in the house and it didn't even bother me till about midnight. I was choking for a smoke and even contemplated walking the 2 miles to the nearest all night garage:eek: Thankfully DH talked me round and I just went to bed. Woke up to breakfast in bed because he was so proud that I didn't break!
The rest of the weekend was a breeze:j
Back at work now and back to brushing my peggs 100 times a day:rotfl:. Feeling different about stopping this time. Got it into my head now that I am giving up nothing of benefit to me and gaining everything so that it good. Just got to get my eating under control now. I brought my kit to work today so I could go the gym at lunchtime but the girl I work with has a dentist appointment so I will have to stay and cover her. Going to try and get away tonight for a run but my kids are all back at after school activites so I will be playing taxi driver tonight. Also, we are forcast for high winds so don't really fancy getting blown away. If I don't get then I will take it as a rest day then make sure I get away tomorrow.
I have noticed that I have sort of struggled breathing the last couple of days. Almost like I can't get enough breath in to my lungs. It's not worrying me too much as a couple of deap breaths sorts it out but it's been happening more and more. Hopefully it's just my lungs repairing themselves!
Hope you are all well and doing great xxxJust little old me!0 -
well i have been hiding for the last few days as i did not manage to resist the smokes when i went out. Wanted to take my nic inhaler out but couldn't find it anywhere (still can't!) and i caved. Silly me. Haven't smoked since that night though so am on 10 days, just kicking myself a bit that if i hadn't given in i would be on over 1 month by now! Never mind, no point in beating myself up about it. Not going out for a while now, think i may have a few drinks on my own one night (at the risk of sounding like a bit of an alky lol) just so i can get used to the idea of drinking but not smoking with nobody around me smoking.
So that's me, well done everyone else, i am back on the wagon firmly
Oh, and i know ii read something about bleeding gums a coupld of weeks back on here, how long will this last? everytime i clean my teeth or eat an apple they bleedshould i go see a dentist or will they sort themselves out in the end?

pops head round the door - please can i join in this is my first day today just woke up and thought no more - normally would have been at the paper shop by 6.30 as i'd run out, would probably had about 10-15 this morning with it being Sunday - last ciggy was about midnight last night and am finding it a bit tough already - may have something to do with stroppy hormonal teenager and o/h still being in his bed and me being the one who has to get up to see to the dog, tidy the house etc etc rant rant rant rant !!!!!!! but i will not be beaten this time, am away to pop into town and get some vitamins, face mask and probably wool to keep me busy - will keep in touch (probably every half an hour when i want to kill somebody!!!!)
good luck to everyone who is trying to succeed in stopping
Och well done...argh poor sue and my abbreviations....
PQ - panic queen - close relative - can't exactly cut her off though right now I've said I'll have a few days break from calls and texts to give me some space....Hope it works...
In the middle of the night I fell asleep on the sofa...woke at 5 and stayed up till 6.30am when I could have really done with going back to bed to avoid her panic (it's hysterics I kid ye not on my voice mail - so I can't even turn the phone off ). Can't text her before 6 as it wakes her up and she uses her phone for a clock in the night... So yeah - probably had nothing to worry about as I tend to wake about 8 if I go back to bed @ 5 but still...I am sick and not thinking straight 100% of the time....
And then she didn't even acknowledge what she's doing to me by text even though I ranted and raved at her by text
So I felt like she hadn't heard me....:(
Anyhow eucalyptus oil and some nice mandarin now ordered from ebay :T...should be here in a few days and was less than £2 a bottle inc postage...
Just wish my VV would come.....
And I have an IS form to fill in asap which can't be filled in till after it's due backso don't know if I will get paid on the 20th or not...Hope I do.... Have some savings but not much.....I don't exactly want to be phoning up for a crisis loan
.. I have loads of DD's coming out next week so I pray I get paid...It can't be filled in as I'm useless when it comes to DWP forms so I get the Welfare Right's worker to help me.... Can't see her till the 20th...they want it posted back on the 19th
And I put my foot in it big time with the friday night toastie club by complaining about the radioactive toasties by email to everyone - oops.....they weren't radioactive but I keep getting paranoid there and thinking they are
So this is me....tad worried now I have this IS form...Pray like I said they pay me on the 20th...have well over £100 in DD's to come out next week and only £400 in rainy day fund and like a little on the OD...
Erme
PS. The bug has gotten worse..... .praise God I'm not smoking else it'd be a chest infection by now :T:dance:

OMG OMG OMG I made it to day 7:T
Well technically I have not been smoke free for 7 days till tonight but I am still doing a little jubilant dance. I know there is no way I will smoke today so I have already chalked 7 days off:D
This might not sound like such a big achievment when some of you guys have gone for months or years but this is actually mega for me as it's the longest I have ever gone cold turkey.:)
I have an app on my phone which tells me how many fags I have not smoked, how much I have saved and how much time I have saved by not smoking. This is what I have found the most shocking, in the past week I have saved myself 12hrs 54min not smoking (working on 6mins per fag) I have also not smoked 129.30 ciggeretts and saved £42.03. There is also all the health benefits that go with it but there is far to many to list here. To say that I am happy is an understatement:)
On the down side, I went for a run yesterday. I normally run 3-5 miles comfortably however yesterday I really stuggled with my breathing:( It almost felt as though I was unable to get enough air in. No matter how deep a breath I took I just couldn't get enough. I only managed 1.5 miles and was throughly upset with myself:( I am hoping this is a side effect of not smoking and will pick up soon enough. I thought my running would improve with kicking the habbit but sadly it looks like it will get worse before it will get better.
To Erme, don't really know what to say apart from well do and give you a big cyber hug!:grouphug:
Thanks for all the help on here, I honestly don't think I would have done this well if it wasn't for you.

Ok here goes!!! What feels like my 30th attempt at stopping smoking has just started. What went wrong before? Lack of will power, coming off NRT too soon, problems with the drugs (yes, I tried those too)!
So last week in the chemist, I spotted the new Nicorette spray and asked about it. Came away armed with patches and spray. First few days I had a couple of sneaky roll ups i nicked from my partner. Don't enjoy roll ups so was defeating any purpose whatsoever.
So yesterday was my first smoke free day. Patches still don't stick too well to my skin, but hey ho, I keep sticking em back on with sticking plasters. Couple of sprays of the mouth spray and it's good, apart from the awful hiccups that seem to have settled down now. For something to do with my hands, I'm "smoking" an empty ecigarette (yes, tried that too!)
Don't have any munchies as yet, but am armed with some big juicy apples as previous advice by sue :hello:
As a 40 a day smoker, I'm looking at the finances and have already saved £24 :j
I'll probably pop back ever day or 2 just for the moral support or the a$$ kick when I need it, gl everyone4 Stones and 0 pounds or 25.4kg lighter :j0
