When I posted chocolate-now on main about 18 months ago it was met with complaints that it should have gone on regulars and that the BG's should have been asked to unlock the thread, post the new month, then get it locked again.
Although I rarely, if ever, looked at the regulars, I have always thought it very necessary to keep the clutter of the weeklies and dailies off the main board but have also thought that, with monthlies only occurring once a month, they should be handled differently and all go on the main board unless there was no specific End Date. (Main board comps MUST have an End Date for people who comp that way and I gather that was a rule right from the beginning).
Since the poll, there have been more daily/weekly comps with end dates being posted on the main board and I have certainly found that it has been taking more time to do my comping. I have entered a few I might previously have found but not many. If everything was posted on main it would only get worse particularly if continuing comps were being given "false" end dates which then needed updating.
As purplecatlover says, there will never be a way that makes everybody totally happy. There will always be people, both current and new who will never read the stickies/rules, will post in the wrong place or with the wrong format and get upset when they are told.
The Poll has happened and we should make the best of the result (with a few minor alterations with experience).
It's time to stop complaining and get COMPING.
I agree with a lot of what you say. I didn't think I was doing anything wrong posting a new answer to an ongoing comp already in regulars. People asked for the polls, got them, and are still bickering.
If monthlies, ongoing or otherwise, aren't regulars any more then can that be written down somewhere please so we all know what we're doing rather than just guessing or doing what we feel like.
I'll happily post any post anywhere. I'm not trying to hide ongoing comps away on regulars. I'm just trying to abide with the majority result on the poll.
Apologies for the bold text but I feel people don't always read everything so wanted to make that bit stand out.
I think everything is being blown out of proportion recently and I feel that whatever I do it's wrong.0 -
I am fairly sure you are referring to the bears4u monthly. Isn't that a regular by the poll definitions? Unless ongoing monthlies aren't regulars I thought I posted it in the right place?
People only have to bookmark the regular thread or use the regular sticky (or look a the regulars board if that's how they roll) to find these each month.
And the comp was "established" on regulars before it was posted on main when the thread got locked.....
I knew you'd realise which one I was on about. The point is that nobody has done anything wrong at all (except maybe in Jan) - everybody has followed the rules and customs as they existed at the time. It wasn't even caught up in the transferring of posts on main into regulars. My main point is that despite all the polls and arguments a comp that was 4 times as popular on main has been moved to regs. I'm pretty sure people will be surprised that this is what they voted for!
We are now in the situation that if the Feb comp had been posted on main it should rightly be moved to the newly re-opened regular thread - so the regs board 'trumps' the main. There are other "monthly ongoing" comps that currently don't have a thread in regulars so normal practice is to post on main each time. If at any point, somebody puts one of these on regulars, then it should never again be posted on main. Are we happy to continue like this?0 -
Just a thought:
People complain that all comps aren't on the main board, well why not move the sticky's to the main board.
In effect that would mean every comp is on the main board but the actual thread for ongoing monthly's/weekly's can remain in regs to keep things less cluttered.0 -

I only knew because I wondered where best to post it myself and wondered if it would all kick off again. I've been being as careful as possible to post everything in the right place.
I don't disagree with your logic one iota. And have never said I have. But people asked for polls, got them, and still moan when the decisions are stuck to.
See my post above. I am fed up and can't be bothered arguing any more. I can't do anything right no matter how hard I try.
EDIT - and I realise you said no-one had done anything wrong. But I've just had enough now. Other people were allowed to have hurt feelings when their posts got moved to regulars so I'm allowed to feel a bit put out too. It's not just you One-Eye, it's the whole discussion/arguement.0 -
beffffff don't get upset just take a back seat for a bit and see what happens or what other people reply. I understand about the teddy bar comp but there are several that are on the monthly sticky that are reposted each month on the main boards incl the coffee cup one.
I also understand what pcl says about the number of pages with end date of 31st of the month and I agree that the number of pages would significantly increase if everything was posted on main.
Can't we just give it a trial of say 8 weeks (2 months) to see how it goes.If at first you don't succeed try, try, try again.

can i clarify please? give using the reg forum a trial with links posted via the method andrea now has added to her sticky a trial or give posting everything on main a trail?
either way yes please to a trial and then re-evaluation of how it is working and if people have adapted or not. but either way we need to know exactly what rules we are following, which i guess nwo the bgs maybe need to sit and spell out for us all?0 -

Thank you
I'm not upset about one particular comp.
It's everything.
Yesterday I was being moaned at for posting direct links onto the sticky and saying in bold that I didn't have time to add them properly so anyone was welcome to add them as a proper post. I thought they were better somewhere on MSE than nowhere.
Today it's posting a comp where the poll says it should go.
The only thing we need here to make things run smoothly is clarity and then for people to accept that the decision has been made whether they agree or not. I don't really think regular comps need to go on main but am posting them there if they have an end date because that's what was decided. Other people that disagree with other things need to just let it rest, give it a try and see how it goes.
And re: a trial I'm a yes to any as long as what I'm meant to be doing is clear.
EDIT - and with that all said I'm bowing out of this discussion as crin suggests (unless I'm asked a question or commented upon). I'm still posting comps and will post them where they are meant to be according to the polls or any new rules/trials that over-rule them But I can't be doing with being upset for doing things right and trying to help. xx0 -
Andrea has added amilucky's idea to her 'new start' thread so at least let's try it for a while
I don't see it as a rule though that every reg comp should have a link thread in mains, the way I see it is it's an option for popular comps that are not to be missed
one advantage might be that people who only use (or know about) the main board will become more aware of the regs board, after following the link, and find a way to use it if they want to,
my way is to have the main board open in one tab and the regs in another, or when I'm opening tabs for comps, the main board in one window and the regs in another, so it is just one extra thing to open each time before you start to comp
who knows in a few months the discussion might be 'we don't need these link threads on mains anymore because we all know where the regs board is now if we want to view it'
all opinions are valid but there's more chance of me marrying Martin than any idea getting 100% approval :rotfl:that's the way of the world,
any comp with an end date, even if it has a regular entry is now posted on mains, hundreds were moved over from the regs board this weekso main compers are already getting to see lots more comps
I've just read all the comments about how every monthly and weekly comp could be posted each month/week in mains with an end date, I don't know if anyone read itbut that was one of my suggestions in Andrea's first discussion thread so I understand it would have worked,
but people wanted polls and we now have to abide by the results, therefore only comps with definite end dates are on mains and ongoing comps on regs
at least now if an ongoing is merged into mains and the OP isn't happy about it they can be given the option to post a thread linking to it on mains every month/weekI am a Senior Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the Wales, Small Biz MoneySaving, In My Home (includes DIY) MoneySaving, and Old style MoneySaving boards. Just to clarify my earlier comments in this thread which have been re-posted
judging by the number of thanks the links have received on the main board and on the regulars board and also by the comment by Begleys after the new link had been postedOh, my goodness, we had "millions" of entries last week. I thought we where moving forward but we now appear to be moving backwards again with recent post's opening up old wounds that where beginning to healOriginally Posted by Mamzie
Amilucky, I appreciate you posting comps and answers, the same as I do with all the members who help make the comps forum so active.
I was under the impression from reading this thread, that you made a suggestion and trialled just a few threads as a result. So you wanted comments and input, whether they agreed with your idea or not. You can't make a suggestion and then get upset when it doesn't automatically meet with 100% approval.
my original comments when the new links where postedOriginally Posted by Amilucky?

if you notice any mistakes with the links please let me know as the threads will be locked shortly (they should be OK as I have double checked them)0 -
one other thing that I forgot to add in my last rather long post
and is something that maybe I should also clarify is that when I suggested the re-directs to the Regulars board I only intended for them to be used for the ongoing weekly comps with new questions and or new prizes with weekly end dates as there are only about half a dozen of these which change on a weekly basis
I did not propose that they be used for ongoing monthlies with new questions and or new prizes with monthly end dates this was suggested by someone else not me
I personally feel that the number of re-directs should be kept to a bare minimum and that they shouldn't be done en mass0
