Tara you're doing so well! What's the other thread you copy from? Savings are all messed up at the mo for me so I'm not sure where I am with everything... Hoping by this time next month it will all be sorted as I have so,e account bonus rate offers expiring (boo!) so will close some accounts which while less interest, may make things a little easier to manage! Hoping for a good savings jump this month as don't feel like I've spent a lot!0

YellowJellyBean wrote: »lol no absolutely not at all, when Ive spoke to other people it's been mostly met with the same reaction and I do understand it. She didnt say it in the way that I posted at all, she just said it was equally as important to her that the people she wanted were there than the location, so if there was people that couldn't attend she could change it to UK. It wasnt said in a nasty way at all and I know she'd rather that her special guests were there than where she is getting married. But I know her too well and I know she wouldn't be totally happy. She's moved the resort she wanted the wedding at to a child friendly hotel (Im the only one in the party of people invited with young children) as she originally wanted it in an adults only but she knows Im too soft to leave my children at home lol
I have no problem with the idea of raising and spending the money on the holiday/wedding however its just the thought of raising it is tricky. I need to be more disciplined (I have quite a bad shoe/dress/tattoo habit) and we needed to have a look at our finances anyway and work out where we're going wrong. So it might not be such a bad thing that this has happened anyway and at least we get a holiday at the end of itBut yeah... I dont think finding £350 a month is gonna be easy lol
Congrats on your savings by the way such an amazing figure to reach!! x
Oh, I'm so glad that you took my post in the spirit that it was intendedAnd you seem to have thought it all through. You're a good friend and I hope that you and your family have an absolute ball at the wedding. :A

I think the higher figures are from people who just earn a high salary, or shared savings with their partners, there is no way I could save 1k+ a month, no matter how frugal I am :S0

My best friend is getting married in May 2015 in Mexico. So I have about 18 months to save £6k for me & my family (husband & 2 children) to go. About £350ish a month.
Help me It means so much for me to go because she has said if I can't she'll cancel the wedding & get married over here but I know its not what she wants at all.
Im a childminder so my wage isnt huge, my husband has an ok job but we have a little bit of debt on credit cards (£2k maybe), 2 x overdrafts which we live in (£2.5k) and hubby has a guitar he's paying for still too. We are in a new house we have a mortgage on and a lot needs to be done but I think we might have to knock it on the head. We also have friends & family who live away, we take it in turns to visit my family in newcastle from leeds every other month (petrol & hotel gets quite pricey), as well as sister in Leicester, friends in Chester, Grandparents in ill health in London that we need to keep visiting as a priority.
So just looking for some support and places to start really. Im determined to do this! But we do have some spending habits we need to kick

Hello and welcome to the thread!
Do you mind if I play devil's advocate for a moment?
Forgive me for saying this, but your friend is being very selfish expecting you to spend £6,000 to attend her wedding. Saying that if you can't go, she'll cancel and have it here - well, that's simple emotional blackmail - and doesn't the groom get a say??
It's their choice where to have their wedding, it's your choice whether you can afford to attend. If I were getting married abroad, I wouldn't expect anyone to come except immediate family - and I'd be paying their travel costs! If any of my friends/relatives expected me to fork out £6,000 to attend their wedding, they'd be very disappointed!!!
If you have £4,500 of debt, would you resent saving up £6,000 and blowing the whole lot on attending this wedding? Imagine what you could do with that money. Pay off your debts (more money in your pocket every month, plus peace of mind), create a nest egg for your family, maybe even a holiday of your own.
Also, I've been to weddings abroad before (only in Europe, so they were relatively cheap) - you think that it'll be a holiday for you too, but invariably half the trip is taken up with wedding-related stuff, so it's not that relaxing at all. Destination weddings have got WAY out of hand imho.
Now, feel free to tell me to mind my own business if you like and I hope that I haven't offended you.
Hi ,I have not used this forum in years (finally working part - time and able to look after grandchild) so a bit more time to myself.Am going to have to start keeping to a monthly budget ,so know I will probably be asking loads of questions. My worry is people like the writer above answering so angrily if I ask a question .Is this normal for this site ?.Lottie0 -

High(ish) salary here, savings all my own.Hi ,I have not used this forum in years (finally working part - time and able to look after grandchild) so a bit more time to myself.Am going to have to start keeping to a monthly budget ,so know I will probably be asking loads of questions. My worry is people like the writer above answering so angrily if I ask a question .Is this normal for this site ?.Lottie
I'm the person who answered that question. As you can see, I was playing devil's advocate.
I did qualify my comments by saying that it was absolutely none of my business, and that this was just one other perspective. And YellowJellyBean took it in the spirit that it was intended, for which I am grateful.
So I don't agree that I answered angrily. I always try to be as helpful as possible to my fellow posters, especially when they're new. However, you are entitled to your opinion.Get to 119lbs! 1/2/09: 135.6lbs 1/5/11: 145.8lbs 30/3/13 150lbs 22/2/14 137lbs 2/6/14 128lbs 29/8/14 124lbs 2/6/17 126lbs

Sorry ,you just seemed very brusque in your reply to person who wrote post . Talked to my daughter in law though and she said most people are very helpful on site, so now not so wary about asking questions.Lottie0 -

I'd like to join in please, will go look for the deposit saving thread in a minute. I've just paid off my debts with some inheritance and kick-started my savings. Sofar I've got £440 in P2P and the rest dotted around in reg saver and ll0yds vantage. I've got 3yrs o save £30k but would like to save £36k. Plus we're expecting in January so wages will drop around feb/mar. OH is also saving £30k so we can put down over 30% on a mortgage.
I'm wheeler dealering craft supplies on eb4y for extra pennies on top of normal wages. I found the DFW diaries really useful but can't see anything like that for savings.Diary: Getting back on track for 2013 and beyondDEBT FREE 13-10-13 :dance::dance::dance::dance:
