This month is pretty good so far - to date this year I am at 24%, and that's just normal savings, not even including the tax I put away for Gordon every month... March is best month so far though £504.33!

what are your thoughts on the housing market?

I have an ISA with natwest with about 6k in it, should i keep it in there or move to Barclays - no idea how much interest Natwest are giving me ! Im rubbish with things like this[/B]

    HELP! on both accounts please!

Hi Jamtart - wish I knew about the housing market!!!! I suspect at the very least a long stagnation coming, if not an actual crash. But that's just my view - there's lots of people who are very bullish about property prices. Where's the crystal ball when you need it! :p

Don't think Barclays allow transfers in, it has to be new money. I don't think Nat West give a particularly high rate. Yorkshire Bank are quite good (5.6 or 5.7%) and there's no drop in the rate after 1 yr like some ISAs.

Savings wise I am going to do a tally up for March next weekend, at the month end, but know I've hit target this month. Got a payrise today which will help!

Anyone seen Wanno? He started this thread but don't think he's posted for ages.

Bradford & Bingley allow transfers in and the rate is reasonable for less hassle, monthly interest, and bringing in 'old' money x

The Yorkshire Building Society e-ISA also allows transfers in, and is a slightly better rate: 5.65% compared with 5.55% for Bradford & Bingley. It only pays interest annually though.

I analysed the housing market for many years and waited hoping for a reduction in prices, it never came. Buying my flat was the best thing I have ever done so I can speak from experience to get on the ladder as soon as possible. Just selling my flat I got 18 months ago for 13k clear profit, its madness. Might be worth waiting until you have a good wage though as you will be able to buy something much better and also have the security from a non contract position?

The NatWest isa has a poor rate for things under 15k so its worth transferring, its not to much hassle. One thing that is good about the NatWest one is that interest is paid monthly so its nice to see from a psychological view, their on-line banking is also excellent.

    Hi Suze,

Thankyou! Am still rather chuffed although beginning to wonder how I can possibly make any more savings to find the extra money we need.

Had a bit of a bad day today. We switched to npower before christmas and got a bill today informing us they were doubling our DD for gas and electricity.

Gas seems to have cost £100 ish a month which seems extortionate. We are only in a 3 bed semi! Oh well pleasure/pain principle I suppose!

I have turned off several radiators now and shut all the doors!Bit late for that tho.

I've got a new purpose for saving...in the form of a big fat holiday to OZ!! Woo hoo!! Initial calculations show i need around £3000 by JULY!

I do have the money to pay it all, but I wouldn't be a moneysaver if I didn't try and earn that back somehow! What a wonderful challenge! I love saving!!!

I know on the DFW board they often post state-of-affairs to see where people could cut back on my current living (not my precious hollyday!) . I wonder if I did that here, you could see if you think I could save anywhere else?

I am ebaying everything within an inch of its life as a starting point! Every little Helps!!

  • Hi,
That sounds like a good idea, I'm thinking where else I could possibly save money but it is hard when you are used to paying a certain amount out.

I also find it hard knowing if I am paying too much for things too!

Good luck with the saving - the holiday sounds great!
