Thank you Ciaran - really helpful :-)
I've had a look and it looks like you have to have a first direct current account to get this account- I understand that is a great rate but I'm not sure I want to change my current account at this stage (only just changed to Santander lol)
Going off to read through the savings account thread. I've looked into the Santander home saver but i cant find it on their website any more- just the Ts&Cs but that may just be up there for existing home saver customers to find when they need it- I cant seem to be able to sign up online.

It's not available anymore.
You could open up the Halifax Reward account. It pays £5 for every month that you pay in £1,000. Get your wages paid into that, and then transfer £2,500 into your Santander account. That way you'll be getting the interest from Santander and the £5 from Halifax.
You can also then get the Halifax Rewards Clarity credit card that pays an extra £5 every time you spend £300+ a month. Just make sure you pay it off in full each month.
Also look into the Santander eSaver for a savings account. There might be better rates available now but it was of the best when I was looking a month or two ago and I think it offers what you want.0 -
It is all about the best interest rate for regular savers.

Is currently the best one with interest at 8% however who can only add £25-£300 a month and the you can withdraw money however the interest rate drop from 8% to 0.5% for that month. So just open this account and save as it says because in any other account you would not get 8% interest.[/QUOTE]
no this is incorrect. You cannot make withdrawals from the account. If you need access to the account they will close it, return the money to the account it came from and pay you interest at 0.05% gross.0 -
Minimum I can save is £500 max is £800 if I not too naughty lol0

Money for my Masters is going up nice and steadily, would be quicker if work could only pay me right; still all in the right direction. Going to try and get it up to £3000 in the next 3 weeks as what i'm owed should come through and determined to cut back a bit on outgoings. Fingers crossed!
Should also get boosted when I get around to selling some things on ebay; figured that money can go straight into savings. Will be done as soon as I'm back from holiday and/when free listings are on again!£2012 in 2012 challenge: £915.28/£2012

Hi everyone,
Keeping to my target which is good but am thinking of splitting the savings I make into two accounts one being instant access and the other a regular saver although the money in it will be tied up for a year. Normally not an issue but am worried about being on maternity pay.
First direct seems to be not bad on the regular saver font but will look at others too.MFW 91 op 2014 £410/1000

Hi the answer to your question would be that your IS maybe affected although this would need to be looked at by a decision maker. DLA is not a means tested benefit so it won't be affected. Regards your Income support (It is means tested) it will depend on how much savings they hold for you at the min. You'll lose £1 from your Income Support for every £500 over £6000. Hold out and see how much compo you receive and then contact your local benefit office and speak to them in advance or even try your local cab. Any other question please dont hesitate to contact or pm me.:smileyheaMarried on 20/07/2012! :smileyhea
