nellshortis wrote: »Hi everyone,
I wonder if you can offer some advice. My boyfriend and I are back home at his parents house so we can save for a deposit. We think we can save about £1200ish between us but what is the best way to do this?! Is it best in one account or different ones, also is the santander home saving account a good idea?!
Help please!
Thanks

Call them first thing - then again after lunch to see how it's going. I'm serious. Fight, fight, fight. If they fight against you instead of for you, then you'll be writing a letter of complaint asking for compensation for the hassle of being without money for several weeks, for stress, and the loss of time where you've had to chase them. Tell them you are not paying charges for being overdrawn, as it is not you who has withdrawn the money - they will reverse these for you. Remind them of their promise to protect you against fraud. You don't have to be rude about it, stay as calm and as polite as possible even though it's difficult in these situations!
Also, for when you get your money back, open an instant access savings account. Get the best rate possible (I'm going to apply for AA's tonight). Work out your average monthly spend, by taking a look through your bank statements and see how much you've paid out over the last 10 months to a year, take an average, then add £100. This is the amount you should leave in your current account - your monthly spend plus a "buffer" amount in case you go over. Every time you get paid, transfer any money above this amount out of your current account into your savings account. Use online banking to check your balance once or twice a week - you can always transfer an extra £100 in from your savings account if you think you might run out.
This way the majority of your money will then be kept safely away and it will be earning you money - it's less likely to be stolen, because there isn't the weakness of the account payment functionality.
Just looked back this post, i remember you saying compensation, i mean i am not the type that wants to do that, but now considering its past 4 weeks, surely i have the right to ask for compensation now ? I am ment to be getting a phone call for a "phone interview", within the next "48hours" 24hours have passed, yet i have stayed in. Its only open till 8, then tomorrow i'll be at work.
Do you think if it would cheeky even when i wrote to the cheif execitive about how am stressed getting overdrawn letters when i reported fraud, and got a letter yesterday saying they have made sure charges are deleted ?
fingers cross when i get the phone call thats it sorted0 -

wow well done for being so honest. Thats good that you have learnt though, but you bought a car at 16? wow thats cool.
I wish my bf would leave a pot of cash at my house!!
Well my first car was just a wreck so only had it 2 days, sold it on for £300 profit thoughThen bought a really smart one i loved....passed my test withen 4 months of turning 17. 2 days after passing a kind lady smashed into the side of me(drivers side, the whiplash effect at work the next day were unreal) writting off my car. Went down as my fault almost straight away,my insurance gave up without fight(Quinn Direct as it was against Norwich Union who they have never won a claim against so dont fight them or so im informed
) So got myself in a bit of a pickle...was only 3rd party aswel
Now im fully comp on a van that goes out of mot in March and i dont think it will pass
)
Work in progress...Update coming July 2012.

oh no! cars are such expensive things arent they!! Luckily my lovely mummy bought me a tank of petrol the other day
I think i want to get rid of my car, shes getting old and i know that in about 6 months she will need some expensive work, but she is literally 1 of a kind and I know I would never get anything so good ever again
oh yeah, I did put £5 into savings today to round down my current account. I now have £31.92 which I have moved since Jan 1st so not too bad for me really!)0 -

I was just wondering if anybody has an account with Barclays, more specifically the monthly savings account?? It seems like a good deal, but not sure whether to take the plunge!! Are there better options out there?0

Rover I have one but couldn't really say if there are better around at the moment. I took it as the penalties for withdrawing cash were less harsh than with other regular saver accounts0

Managed to add another £550 to the pot this month and have been very restrained with my M&S card this month so will hopefully see the benefit of that next month. Very close to £12k now0
