  • Thanks Lucy - it's sometimes a bit confusing having joint debts and then my own savings, but I earn quite a bit more than my OH and spend many years supporting him, so now we put 75% of our income into a joint account (that only I have access to!!!!) and then the other 25% is ours to do what we want. Mine gets saved, he drinks his, but it means that I stop stressing about it! And hopefully, when we have paid off our debts (and then the £750 for OHs permanent residency visa this month!!!) I'll be able to report back to you all about our joint savings as well as my own!

I envy you getting your bf to pay for everything Lucy, think I picked the wrong one!! If you wanna swap any time... He is worth it for all his other qualities though so maybe I'll keep him for a bit.

Drivingsoon - when did you start work? My guess is that you will be paid a week in arrears and you'll get you cheque for last weeks work at the end of this week, fingers crossed for you though!

Anzac - I've done 2 trips home in 5 years but luckily caught my travelling bug from my parents so they've done more travelling in Europe in the last 5 years than I have so I get see them pretty regularly! You best get saving if it is a permanent move, cos there's always that temptation to go home for the big birthdays, weddings, and other special occassions!!!! Enjoy the trip coming up, maybe there'll even be a summer in Aus (I shouldn't say that cos I would take the Englist weather any day, sad hey!)

Sorry, didn't mean to make this post an essay!
Keep up the good work everyone!

  • Ive got two savings accounts,
One with my local building society, Derbyshire,
just a Young Saver account at 4.95%,
got £700 in there saved up for a car,
and ive set the money i get from college(EMA) to go into there,
    so i dont touch it,
and another with Halifax, a Regular Saver at 10% fixed for a year,
ive done myself a budget to see how much i can put into that from my wages, by standing order, at the moment its set at £100 a month,
and ive got £130 in that saver,
so im just going to let those build themselves up :D
just adding my savings to the forum hehe.

Sad times as regards my first of the month interest... I received a penny in interest into my B&B savings account. Hopefully my Egg ISA will give me a good return next month!

Oh well, every little helps ;)

  • Hi all - Bit of a disastrous month pour moi, having got back from Brazil (brilliant, you must go!) (and having totally smashed our spending money budget) we’re now moving flats – now having to find 6 weeks deposit and all the other little costs that moving inevitably entails. Still I’m only borrowing from my savings and hope to be square with myself by this time next month… will deffo be making work sandwiches for the rest of September! Hope other people are doing better!

    Hi,
    This is a nice thread.
I read the first few pages and the last few but can't bring myself to read them all!
I'm doing well with saving but wondering if there are any spreadsheets that you guys use to help you keep track of ISAs/regular savers/e-savings accounts etc.
Getting the best deals does seems to mean getting complicated and it would be nice to have a way of keeping track of all these accounts and interest rates in one place - perhaps with a predictor of how much you'll have by a certain date if interest rates stay unchanged, and a graph to illustrate this, etc
    Does anything like this exist?
  • I used a combination of jGnash (Google it, free software) and spreadsheets. JGnash makes it easy for me to quickly produce a profit and loss and balance sheet, and compare it to previous months.

I then have spreadsheets that detail my plan, and forecast what I'll have by when. I just simply look at average increase in savings each month - nothing too fancy. I have a budget set out in a spreadsheet, that I compare to my P&L, which flags up areas I'm overspending in, as the month progresses.

Just play around with spreadsheets, and I'm sure you'll find somethign that will work for you. The help is great if you want to know whetehr excel can calculate things for you... there may even be a function that would work out interest for you, if you provide deposit, time and rate... I'm not sure.

Aussie on a budget - yes, my bf is a star, and I'm keeping him - mine all mine! But you do seem pretty clued up as to how to handle your OH - love it that the joint account he has no access to! And you're doing really well with the debts, so it's obviously working :)

    thanks!
very helpful, obviously there isn't a MSE tool for this!
will have a play with excel but I'm not great at it apart from the basics.
Perhaps I'll do what you do in your sig and just keep a track on how close I'm getting to my target each month - hopefully seeing the % grow will keep me enthused.........

I just worked out that I earned £84.91 in interest this month!!

Sounds really good when I write it down :)

  • Wow, I thought my £27.50 was pretty amazing! When I grow up I wanna be just like you!

To make yourself feel even better, how much is that over a year - and then compound it!

Hmm, I think I need to stop there, the numbers are talking to me!

  • Hi All

Now I don't wish to be presumptious or big headed about this but if anyone would like to nominate me for the 50 pound award post of the month, for my fairly recent post about saving money for the ladies amongst us, by buying low priced and good quality make-up including foundation mascaras, which are normally quite expensive, from shops like Poundland and also buying make-up aimed at the teenage end of the market, then I would be delighted !!!!! :j This initiative is saving me pounds and pounds already - just think how much that saving could add up to in a given year.

Well, it's true in this world, if you don't ask, you don't get (!!!!) so please excuse my exceptional cheek here but you never know just what is around the corner............perhaps a 50 pound award for me.....Yiiipppppppeeeeeeee! (Oooh I hope so!!!)

    Happy saving folks
