    Hi All,

Just joining this thread, hope that's OK. I have joint finances with my husband. T Have finally completed on our flat sale though and since we've been in a rented flat for the last couple of months we are now no longer paying both rent and mortgage. We had been saving up till now but are planning to up this further as we save for a bigger house deposit (and wait for the housing market to do whatever it does!)

I like the idea of using %s rather than absolutes especially as my take home varies from month to month due to overtime.

This month we're aiming to save 30% of our take home pay, we had the final payment on a mortgage this month. Of course taking into account the money coming through from our flat sale it was more like 1200% of our MONTHLY take home....don't think that counts though!
Hoping for more like 45% in January but we'll see...

Welcome nethesi... Welcome to the money savers world lol

I would use this formula for 2008:

Amount saved so far in 2008 (Not Including Interest)
Total expected to earn in 2008 X100 = Percentage Saved

Then at least you have a preset number you can divide by which makes things easier for me to calculate.

  • Hi all,

Just a quick update. I do enjoy checking back here and keeping up to date with how everyone is getting on :D

Happily for me I got a 2k payrise last month which leaves me with and extra £100 a month. Couple this with the CC being paid off now, that also leaves me with an extra £100 a month :j

I'm currently saving for my car insurance which is due in April and will be around £800. From April onwards I'll be doing more short term saving for a holiday to Switzerland which I reckon will be around £1500.

So the thing at the moment is that short-term saving is getting in the way of long-term savings (ISA) but after Christmas I'll make sure I start throwing more money in the ISA (I want a nest egg!!)

Oh, and really nice to see you back on here Tom. Well done for doing so well!

Thanks for the welcome McSaver, I've added the club to my signature!

Good to have a challenge to be a member of, I'm going to fill up my house buying fund for the next few months, and see what happens... going to go for gold until a house purchase happens and then we'll see - probably have to cut back to silver or bronze then.
  • Just checking in to update everyone on my savings.

At the beginning of the year me and bf (well me really!) said we would like to get to 40K by the end of the year.

So we now have £39,600 so I am I allowed to say we've done it?? :j

This is without bf's savings for december, which probably wont be much as he has a lot of functions to go to :o
  • Hi, having become addicted to this site over the last week i have taken the plunge to take on some more saving challenges:j :j .
Have always been someone who likes to get a bargain and watches the pennies, but in the last couple of years have not been so careful with the pounds and have been buying what i wanted when i saw it, within reason.

So...am signing up for the grocery challenge and will start looking at quidco etc although i am a little sceptical about getting 'something for nothing'.

Am self-employed so income not exact but on last year's income should have around £486 a month left over after all bills so this would include food, petrol, gifts, spending money, holidays and any extras.
Wanting to start at £200 for supermarket shopping, so that would be food and cleaning stuff, weekly newspaper, probably spend £50 a month on petrol for personal use(but that is a guess).

Usually put everything on credit card and pay off in full each month, but think i spend more than if i use cash, so last month i started by taking out £200 out in cash for month, however DH not on same page and he thinks this is daft so he continues to withdraw cash and buy things, although he doesn't really spend much money.....

the support from these forums and now committing myself by telling you all means I have an incentive to follow through.....

Am aiming for bronze olmpic challenge to start with...how do i make that part of my signature...still trying to work this all out!!!!
    any advice gratefully received:D
  • Wow thats really impressive Chelseablue, i'd say you can let yourself celebrate, afterall whats £400 when you have saved almost 100 times that!

    Hi

First of all welcome to this inspiring thread!

To set your signitue click on the link User CP at the top of the page, or use the link I have just posted. Then look on the left menu and you will see "Edit signiture".

Tips: well I save regularly and do this via a fixed means, and that is direct from my salary to a nominated accounts, that way things stay regular and it is surprising how fast your money grows. I also resist he temptation to dip into savings by making it hard to immediately get at. I also, save on behalf of my young daughter and at the end of the week all my spare change goes into her Save4it money box. That also quickly builds up so she has a healthy balance for a 4 year old. So, for the latter point just make sure you skim anything not spent, i.e. your spare change during the week into another account, or into a piggy bank.

I always save for planned events, things that you know are going to happen, for example, Christmas and car and home insurance renewals, etc etc. So for Xmas we buy saver stamps at Morrison's throughout the year and spend them in December, this year we achieved £179 saving stamps. Car insurance I just skim the amount I expect to pay from my current account over a few months before renewal and that just helps smooth the cost out a bit.

Quidco is good, I recently got £95 cashback for insuring my car with the Prudential, the Prudential was the best quote from all I tried and I also got the cashback, so a good result. I deem Quidco earnings as an Xmas 2008 fund as before Xmas next year there will be a few more opportunities to bag some more big cashbacks, such as, our other cars insurance will need renewing and home insurance. Also, gas and electricity switching will boost the quidco account.
