Thanks all! Aargh, I just lost a post ... well, anyway, I was thanking you all and wittering about the garden, thats exactly right, "under control and useable" - even the square yard of ground I just dug took ages.

Gardening question: when people are digging a fresh area to clear it for their own planting, how much do they take out? I think I must try to leave too much earth in there, instead of just digging stuff up and putting it all to one side. Instead, I'm sifting through (which is very difficult in clay soil!!!!) for clods of earth that are still okay. I think thats why digging takes so long for me. Can anyone give me any feedback about how they dig in the garden?

That sounds mad, I know! But its a genuine issue - I tired myself out doing a square yard!!!

Sorry can't help on the gardening, they are a complete mystery to me.
If you aren't doing your veg patch are you going to do salad stuff in pots? You can do that indoors or out, and baby lettuce doesn't take much maintenance. If I can grow stuff on a 2ft window ledge, anyone can!

    - get the new phone working - with the old one, even when its on, people can't phone me. And I can't even top it up - its dying underneath me, I *must* get the new snazzy one working.

What's the problem? Unpack the base station, plug it in, plug it in again using the other plug, and the stick the handset in on charge.

The only thing to remember is to take the handset out of the little plastic bag as otherwise:

:hello: Lots of paid work today, so not doing too much other than that. Builder's coming at 10.30, the one who put the loo in - I've had 3 double glazing quotes now, and I've realised the thing that makes me *really* unhappy is akin to the double glazing need, all the little holes in the woodwork and the floorboards, in the porch and under the stairs, that spiders come through - stopping that will make the place much more mine, and it will also make the place warmer in winter. Plus the surveyor said the porch needed more underfloor ventilation, as building it stopped up some airbricks. Now I've had the first quote from the first double glazer, its worth doing, as its slightly under what I thought it would be.

Morning.. digging - we usually just dig/ fork what's there to break it up, maybe down to about a spade's depth. Take out any stones/ bits of broken plate (why are there always bits of broken plate?) and maybe dig in a bit of compost if the soil isn't good. If it's very clay-y then you might be better just getting rid of most of what's there and replacing it, if that's what you mean? :)

That is what I mean, thats right Squizz - I think I'm being too particular about trying to leave behind as much soil as possible. Maybe I actually need to replace the soil, or maybe 60% of it, anyway. But what do I do with the stuff I take out? There's a garden waste service from the council, but they won't take soil. I guess I need to lump it all somewhere and get a commercial firm to take it away? Sigh ... there are so many types of things to do!

Ah well. I think an online order and home delivery is called for, of topsoil and bark mulch.

Hmmm not sure about the extra soil.. add some to compost bin/ heap? Build a small hill for elves to sledge down?

Personally I would keep the extra soil in just remove the weeds big stones etc. and yes we get broken pottery too and then add anything you have got compost, old grow bags and fork it in to try and break down the clay a bit you can never have too much soil in my opinion and its a shame to dig it out pay to have it taken away and then to have to buy and replace it you could always plant potatoes that would help break up the soil.
