Apparently the best way to move onwards and upwards is a combination of talking and pills... the pills help your mood for a bit, while you work on the talking to find the root cause of the problem and find ways of dealing with it.

I would agree with this. The pills will never find the root cause of the problem.
To be honest though I dont particularly like talking to people, because when I think about it really I have so much to be happy about it and really cant explain why I feel so unhappy sometimes.
But I am determined to try and 'sort myself out' (if thats even the right term to use) before this baby is born. I am very lucky in that I have such a supportive partner who will listen to me rambling for hours :D

I have to say,I havent found the fluoxetine to be particularly useful, part of the reason I decided to come off them, was because I was beginning to feel worse again and thought 'well, whats the point of being on them?'.They did stabilize my mood though to a certain extent. The mood swings recently have been extreme since I've come off them.I have fibromyalgia, depression and eating issues so I currently have quite a support team, including my gp,health visitor, therapist and psychiatric nurse-with the occasional psychiatric doctor, thrown in for good measure :p:D
I have found that talking is the key.The medication doesn't deal with the cause and underlying issues, but working through all the feelings is painful and draining. Can't believe I'm posting this-I hope you don't think I'm completely bonkers! It's only when it comes to me,my body and my self perception that things get a bit fuzzy with every other aspect of life I am very sensible and logical:rotfl:

I would be wary of coming off off any kind of medication cold turkey unless you know what's coming and take medical advice. Mr F takes Citalopram at the moment, and any time he's run out he's been hellish to live with. It's then bad when he has to go back on them as his body gets used to them again.

Please take GP advice before you come off any meds.

(PS...we might need to be careful discussing this as for legal reasons MSE can't be seen to have people giving medical advice, it's on one of the other boards)

Psycho - can you get pre-payment certificates? In Scotland our prescriptions are free, but before that you could get an annual certificate for a sum that worked out cheaper than filling a couple of prescriptions a month.

Yep I agree FF,going cold turkey was not one of my brightest ideas!I think that seeking medical advice from a gp is defo the way to go.:)

Winnie / psycho / Twinkles / Flower: First, thanks for sharing & all being so honest, but can I just ask... Has anyone had any experiences (good or bad) on Fluoxetine or Sertraline?

Mr D finally admitted to GP he's struggling to cope since RTA in 09 (constant pain despite spinal surgery last year) so she put him on 50mg Sertraline. Made his mood much better really quickly but he always had dodgy tum with these so she changed him on to Fluoxotine. Mood changed back to not so good quite quickly so now he wants to go back to Sertraline. Musical tablets ;)

So, question is, long term are these going to make a difference? I suggested maybe he should be talking to someone... Not everyone's cup of tea I know but might be better? Will the tablets always be hard to come off & do they help the underlying problems?

You won't know till you try. I had a really good experience on Sertraline a few years ago. Stopped psychosis even :). Made a huge difference. But now am piling on the lbs with mirtazapine. Only thing I would say on SSRI's is get periodic blood tests to check for serotonin syndrome. It's important but not to put you off. You could be run over by a bus tomorrow :)

Anyhow finally my equifax cashback on TCB is PAYABLE :D

So £16.66 to OD for me today please (the equifax took months to be payable)
