This thread looks like a gold mine! We are staying at the mandalay bay and have to try the $20 trick! Is it going to be worth making it well known that we are on our honeymoon at check - in?

    Thanks!

I reckon it can only strengthen your case - do it!

that is so sad...watched the race coverage last night.
we could have been there - had originally planned to time our trip with the race but brought things forward a month.
Does remembering a time that a certain degree of personal responsibility was more or less standard means that I am officially old?

saying you are on your honeymoon is more likely to get you a *proper* upgrade rather than a $20 tip (bribe?). It's amazing how many people fall for the $20 thing - mostly the 'upgrade' you get is a higher floor or a different view and isn't an upgrade at all. By all means ask for an upgrade - but only tip if you actually get one rather than before!

    Anyway, good luck!

    erm.

OK - we normally consider anything where we get a room that would cost more an upgrade...and view is certainly something that can impact pricing of the room (though some aren't fussed with a better view as the only point of the upgrade).

We don't do the whole sandwich thing - we ask nicely if there are any complementary upgrades available, maybe I have a $20 in my hand, but I'm not all obvious about it...if we get an upgrade, we hand over a tip.

I think the most important thing is to know what sort of room you would be happy being upgraded to - that way you know if what they are offering is an upgrade, and one you would want to take.

Mat is kinda correct. The times I hear that someone was offered an "upgrade of higher room, strip view, etc for handing over the "bribe".
If you want a real upgrade do your homework first, you are really looking for a larger room/upgraded amenities, you will on very rare occasions get a suite, but look at the descriptions of the rooms on the hotel website before you go and ask for what you are after. If say you are at the Paris say something like "are there any complimentary upgrades available to a "P" room fountain view", or if in Caesars, "any chance you can get us in the Augustus tower" but I would let them see your money, and the more money the more chance of the upgrade. I disagree with the "sandwich" technique of placing it between your driving licence and credit card, they can't see what you are offering because they will not unfold it. I place mine open in my passport, when they open it they can see $40-$50 and I say "that is for you "IF" you can get me..."
If they can't get you what you are after then they will return the money in the passport. I even had a checkin girl return it after she got me the room I wanted. There is the debate that they will give you an upgrade just by asking but you can never really know about that, so I prefer to play safe, except at the Platinum, where you really only do have to ask.
The common law of business balance prohibits paying a little and getting a lot. If you deal with the lowest bidder, it is well to add something for the risk you run, and if you do that you will have enough to pay for something better.

BUT the upgrade you speak of ie higher floor different view (assume you mean strip view) is often charged at a premium rate,so it is an upgrade over the bog standard cheapest room, if you are there for a week and can get that for $20 you are still ahead.

I do agree that often you can get that just by asking though

We managed to get an "upgrade" to a brilliant strip view just by taking a queen bedded room rather than the King we had originally booked - we were just offered it at check in. were told where both rooms were and chose the view. Strip view rooms were on the list as $30 per night upgrade so $270 as we were there 9 nights.
