Going to Vegas for first time on Saturday, very excited. Staying at the Bellagio for 5 nights.
Been reading up on this site for a while now and got loads of useful info.
I've got a few things that some may be able to answer:
1) Would anyone recommend Papillion helicopter tours, seem much cheaer than Maverick?
2) Temperature is about 16-20 degrees over there currently is it worth packing my shorts?
3) What are 'must do' things for a first timer?
Thanks alot.
We went with Papillion, they were fine, but I could see the ground from some of the little gaps in the plane floor, we flew from Boulder to the canyon.Plus it was very noisy but the views were spectacular and flying over the Canyon gives you some idea of how vast it is.
I'd say must do's are;
Bellagio fountains
Bellagio Conservatory
Venetian to see the Gondolas
Paris to see the Tower
See Big Elvis at Bill's.
Lions at MGM
Mirage volcano
Sirens of TI at Treasure Island...totally top cheesy tastic.
Downtown for the light show at Freemont Street...amazing.
All these are free to do.
Also see a show, drink a cocktail that you've never had before, people watch, get out and see Red Rock Canyon or Valley of fire, eat a deep fried twinkie, ride a rollercoaster at NYNY, got to the Stratosphere and go to the Top of the World restaurant...
Basically just have a blast and maybe gamble a bit too.:DDFW Nerd 267. DEBT FREE 11.06.08

MarchJust caught the end of Megastructures on channel FIVE, where they demolished the Frontier. Try and catch it if they repeat it.
There's a Megstructures on 2nd Feb on National Geographic that is for the Hoover Dam bypass bridge.I've known some here to have several hotel reservations up until a week or so before at which point they'll make a final choice and cancel the rest....
Have to agree. One trip, I changed all our hotels the day before we left as cracking deal came up at the last minute. We went with Papillion, they were fine, but I could see the ground from some of the little gaps in the plane floor, we flew from Boulder to the canyon.Plus it was very noisy but the views were spectacular and flying over the Canyon gives you some idea of how vast it is.
I've been with Maverick. No holes in their floors! :rotfl: Helicopters were immaculate. Can send you a photo if you want later as I have a couple of photos of it. Just let me know....
We also sat in the front 2 seats on the way back, mostly as I felt a little claustrophic in the back on the way there. They're not as big inside as you'd think.
Oh, and I must, must, must see the new Mirage volcano this trip. 10 days in Vegas last time and I still missed it, lolLove MSE, Las Vegas and chocolate!0 -

Is a credit card really an essential over there? Most hotels seem to request a credit card as a security measure, fair enough I suppose - they've probably seen more than their fair share of thrashed hotel rooms, but I'm happy to say I don't have a credit card, only a visa debit card. Is that likely to be a big problem? I could get a pre-paid Mastercard (from Moneybookers) if that was seen to be useful but not that interested in getting a CC.
Has anyone else used a debit card to book hotel rooms online, and then cancel these rooms later on when cheaper alternatives become available (as is the advice on this forum). How has this worked out?
This is the only thing holding me back at present - the lack of credit card. I'd love to book my dream holiday. Should I just bite the bullet and apply for a CC?
Thanks.
I dont have a credit card, nor does the missis.... we use Visa Debit Cards.... Staying in Trop for 1 week, plus 1 day Dollar car rental (fuel pre-paid), then 3 days fort lauderdale with 3 day Dollar car rental (fuel pre-paid), then 1 week in Orlando, with 7 day Dollar car (fuel pre-paid).
In theory, lots of "Holds" to put on my card.........
I wont bill anything to my room, so Trop want $50 cash as 'security hold'
Dollar may put $100 hold on my visa debit card for ALL 3 of my rentals, but as fuel is pre-paid and theres no excess, they dont need in theory to take any money from me, hence being told they might take $100 hold, they might not....
Hotel in Ft Lauderdale want $50 cash as 'security hold'
and Four Points Studio City in Orlando want $50 as a security hold too.....
So dont worry about credit cards, just say you wont be paying $20 for a can of coke and billing it to your room, so they will just take $50 cash(based on pre-paying for your room that is)

MayIt seems to vary a lot the hotel "hold" business.
I don't take creditcards to Vegas and don't use prepay rates.
From memory these are the ones I remember -most are from multiple stays
Caears wanted $200 a night
Flamingo were supposed to want $100 a night-then supposedly dropped charges if you'd prepaid-then dropped the policy and wanted nothing-then put the policy back again LOL When I checked in one time when the policy was running and my card wouldn't go through -he just shrugged and took no deposit
Orleans insist on deposit
Riviera don't care if it's a prepaid rate (although website says otherwise) did otherwise
Gold Coast didn't care
Imperial palace didn't want one either
As we rarely stay more than 3 nights in any one hotel I usually pay the deposit in cash and have it refunded at check out-Works better as I find the holds can take up to 2 weeks to clear (on debit cards)and the deposit goes onto the next stay (or into a slot if it's our last stay)

FYI - I got mine delivered from Amazon on Friday, 2 weeks early
Ellis Island will be visited at least twice in March - but maybe more as we're staying in Bills. :beer:0 -
January / FebruaryCurrent forecast has it cooling down quite a lot by next weekend...but it's always quite up in the air.
We'll be taking a couple of pairs of shorts early March just in case.
But ultimately it depends on the person...my hubby will be wearing shorts when it's much cooler than I will and will be quite happy about it.
I won't pack any I'll just buy out there if needs be!
