OK. Just booked for........tomorrow!!! Fly US Air via Charlotte, staying nine nights at Terribles......strip hotels wanted silly money for Labor Day weekend. Going solo as Im going to play poker......have car so will be playing on the strip.

I'm going to search the thread but am I right in thinking I pick up my bags in Charlotte and recheck them on the outward only? Presumably they have some online checkin system as well........

You will go through immigration at Charlotte, then pick up your bags and wheel them to the next area and put them back on. Good news is no immigration at Vegas

Hi lesley74 thank you for the offer.

From the information we have, it looks like we need to book a time at the Office of Civil Marriages. We have read that people wait for another couple and offer to be each others witnesses as totallybored mentions. However if we have to book a time we may not be able to guarantee that.

We are planning on phoning the office this evening to clarify this. Depending on the outcome, I will drop you a PM tomorrow.

Thanks for all the responses so far.

We are off in October and can't wait!

I have been before and seen the Grand Canyon but it is the first time for my partner (and boy! is she excited)

Looking at the various South Rim tours and this one (Papillon) stands out at $84 each. The thing that turns me off it is the 5 hour coach journey each way - but the tours that fly there are way more expensive! Unless you wise MSE'rs know different of course?....... This one looks interesting too at $129 each

Or would an air trip to the West Rim be just as good an experience?

Views most welcome please (Views - see what I did there? lol :rotfl:)

The consensus is that the South Rim is better, though I have never been there, but of course it is a long way and more expensive. The West rim i have been to and by hele only takes about 3/4 of an hour. Although not as scenic as the SR it is still a good trip, and after all most people only want to say they have been to the Grand Canyon. We did our trip with Papillon and it was really good. My advise is to book the last trip of the day because then on your way back you get a free twilight flight down the strip.
The common law of business balance prohibits paying a little and getting a lot. If you deal with the lowest bidder, it is well to add something for the risk you run, and if you do that you will have enough to pay for something better.

Just remember to stick any bottles etc you buy in England (duty free, sun block etc) in your proper luggage in Charlotte before re-checking them in.

Ah Virgin long hall, I know Virgin 'long time' and it doesn't do what it says on the tin. I don't get uptight about it as it is purely a means to an end namely Vegas baby! I prepare by getting in the mind set of just hunkering down for the duration of the journey. This time I'll have my Ipad, Ipod and Kindle, between them they see me though. I always eat at the airport on either leg that way if the food is 'not of acceptable standard' then I'm still fine. I only really find the meals act as a diversion on route anyway. I can usually get some sleep in both directions and not worry about missing a meal (mind you look at me and you might reckon I could do with missing a few perhaps!).

Very rarely drink so not bothered about the booze, remember you're on something like a 36 hour day and boozing is not a great idea if you want to enjoy the rest of the day and night in town. You will be arriving in Vegas at about 14.30 which is 22.30 UK time and you will have probaly at least another 10 hours in front of you, and if like me and as old and crusty as I am then you won't sleep well the night before, it's still exciting.

I always have a T-shirt in my hand luggage as I have been known to resemble Vesuvius when opening sealed containers etc. Let alone what your neighbours might do, there are stories on here projectile related. I do have wet ones as well, decent for a bit of a freshen up.

A few sweeties or nibbles and that's me, on the return leg I get a bit stupid with the peanut butter filled ritz type biscuits and so on.

My hand luggage is just that, what I'll need on the flight and not as a backup suitcase, add money, stand alone charger pack, travel docs, pen & paper and a few asprin/ paracetamol and that's really it, so 6 kilos is fine. I might have 20 fags in there, don't usually buy in duty free as M Reds are cheaper in the tribal shops.

I fly Virgin for the flight time and usually the discounts with Virgin miles. If I have a good trip then I usually upgrade from economy at the desk, does make a difference for leg room if nothing else (I'm 6'4").

I've travelled lots over the years and the journey does not do it for me so my approach is it gets me there and I've seen standards in general drop world wide, so never have great expectations of carriers and usually I'm not disappointed.

Thanks Spursman, a mine of info there. I see it as a means to an end too (with any flight) hate flying, but it's gotta be done!

We are in Vegas on that day, however moving hotels in the morning. We do have a car though, and could be possible. If someone else offers then go with it, but if you've not got anyone are you able to drop me a pm (not sure if new posters can send pm's?).

Hi lesley74, I have just sent you a PM, please let me know if you don't get it?

    Thanks
