MarchHi all - quick question..
how long after landing in Vegas should we book the car hire collection?
We're on the Virgin flight from Gatwick - landing at 14:20.
I usually book for 4pm, some car hire agents ask for your flight number so they are aware.
I know they say they will hold the car until that time, but I've never run into that as an issue, even turning up late, the latest being a whole day when VA cancelled a flight.0 -

Thanks Spursman!
We arrive 21st Oct and but originally decided against a car for Vegas.
My minor obsession (OH's words, not mine) with this forum changed my mind. I realised that we have a few things to get sorted for the wedding etc before guests arrive that we'll probably be better off with a car.
Also, how lenient are the rental companies with return times?
I have a feeling a read about a 1 hour grace period somewhere or other!?!
We have already booked an SUV with Dollar picking up on 28th @ 5pm.
If we book a car for pick-up 21st @ 4pm & drop off 28th @ 4pm, will we be hit with a fee if we were to bring the 1st car late/ picking up 2nd car early?
Sorry for rambling - not sure if the above even makes sense :rotfl:Married in Vegas - 25th October 2011!

OctoberThere is no leniency!! Not with dollar anyway. The time you pick up is not very important as far as the voucher goes. As long as you return before the 24 hour period is up from collection. We returned our car 1hour late and dollar hit us with a $94 charge for another 24 hours even though when we returned the guy said there would be no charge. We only found out a month later on my CCThe common law of business balance prohibits paying a little and getting a lot. If you deal with the lowest bidder, it is well to add something for the risk you run, and if you do that you will have enough to pay for something better.0

But totally unsustainable if you think about it.......£200+ taxes, and the other £100 to pay for fuel, staff, planes, food, drinks, movies, handlers etc.
Not particularly close on the taxes/charges! Of course taxes are higher for PE/business/first but the vast majority of flyers will pay something along these lines. (from Virgin) - see below. It's the fuel surcharge that is the killer but if you consider how much we gripe on about petrol/diesel prices....
In Sep 2000 there was the mass demonstrations at the oil refineries and the blocking of the motorways. Unleaded at that time was about 77p /litre. with prices now about 135p per litre. Just under 80% rise.
In the same time period aviation fuel has gone up over 300%!!! (87c per US gallon in 2000, its now over $3 a gallon). Up over 50% than this time last year, but thankfully its 10% lower than at its highest point earlier this year.
Operating Airline Fuel & Insurance Surcharge GBP 201.00
USA Animal & Plant Health Inspection Service Fee GBP 3.10
USA Immigration Service Fee GBP 4.30
USA Customs User Fee GBP 3.40
UK Air Passenger Duty GBP 60.00
UK Passenger Service Charge GBP 13.29
USA Transportation Tax GBP 20.20
USA Passenger Civil Aviation Security Service Fee GBP 1.50
USA Passenger Facility Charge GBP 2.800 -

OUCH!
Thanks for the help - We'll have to keep our eyes on the clock to make sure we get the SUV to San Francisco in time!Married in Vegas - 25th October 2011!

Hi, We are travelling to Vegas for the first time on Monday and have booked car hire for two days. By mistake I put from Vegas Airport, not realising I could have booked it from the hotel. When I tried to change it through Car Hire 3000 they said they were unable to amend it. Would it be possible to get it changed at the airport. Thanks for your help.0

Are you not picking the car up when you arrive? You're picking it up sometime afterwards? If so, when you get to town you could call the rental car agency and ask if you can change it - but the hotels generally have a much smaller inventory - so may depend on how much lead time you can give them.
The rental car facility 'at the airport' is not actually at the airport - it's a separate facility - you take a free shuttle bus to get to it...so you won't be able to just walk up to the desk when you arrive - you would have to shuttle to the facility...and if you're not picking the car up when you arrive, it probably doesn't make sense to go to the facility to discuss the change, then have to get to your hotel from there. There may be phones at the airport to connect you to the rental agencies...I know there are at ORD, have never looked for them at LAS...so I suppose you could use those phones, if they exist, to call to discuss changing the pick up location.
If you are planning on picking the car up when you arrive, there's probably no benefit to trying to get it swapped to your hotel...plus, you'll save taxi fare getting to your hotel in the first place.Does remembering a time that a certain degree of personal responsibility was more or less standard means that I am officially old?0 -
