Jon, I did ask in a previous post, what dates are you looking at, I am intrigued about the buffet of buffets only being $10 extra per night.

Did you check all the cheap booking links

Sorry, missed it on the last page!

Dates are July 9th to 14th. (although, I'm thinking that trying to book into any stip hotel on a Saturday afternoon might a bit of task, so might move the start date to the Friday??).

When I checked it on Monday the cost was coming in at an ave of $59 a night, with the B of B offer it came in at an ave of $69 a night. BUT I've just checked the dates with the Friends & Family offer (which I missed before somehow?) and that's coming in at $52 a night!
No brainer, go with the Friends & Family and find offers for 2 for 1 and the like for meals...

Is it true you can smoke in casinos in Las Vegas?

Yes, there are a few areas that are 'smoke free' but yes you can.

I find that incredible and (a) bad news because I've given up smoking and (b) good news because I haven't really (although I have) (but it is a holiday)

I agree with you completely. I find it disgusting that there are now some no smoking areas in casinos. Go stay at the Westin, they don't allow smoking in their place.
The common law of business balance prohibits paying a little and getting a lot. If you deal with the lowest bidder, it is well to add something for the risk you run, and if you do that you will have enough to pay for something better.

So here goes my trip report, not quite as exciting as planned as you will see:

Fly out Sunday 8th May with Virgin , having stayed at the Menzies Chequers Inn near Gatwick the night before, which was very small but perfectly fine for a night before a flight (cheap with alpharooms deal). I however had got myself so worked up about flying (not scared of crashing but tend to feel sick, and it's my longest flight ever) that I'd made myself ill the day before, ironic really since that is what I was worried about. After taking lots of medication we (me and OH) got on the plane and it was fine - no stag/hen parties, only one screaming child. I think the alcohol did 'run out' but no one was really drunk and we weren't drinking anyway. The IFE wasn't working, just on our row, but this actually turned out better as I got given a portable DVD player with a better choice of films!

Arrive on time and get a taxi to MGM Grand, I'm not sure what way we did go but there was no sign of any tunnel?? Taxi was $15 inc tip. We check-in (waited 10 mins) and get a grand tower room on the 9th floor with a view towards Hooters - I got it for $55 and the lower resort fee of $10 as I booked ages ago which they charged correctly when I checked out.

Unpacked then wandered out, round MGM and out onto the strip, once we found it! This was the _really_ windy day and totally not what I was expecting! Walked up to PH and around there, came back, I still wasn't feeling great so just get 'dinner' at Nathan's hot dog place in MGM, I can only manage half my (very salty) fries. Go back to the room and crash out about half 7.

Mon 9th: Manage to sleep till about 6am which I didn't think was bad. Get out about 8 and wander over to NYNY where we get breakfast. It's at this point I realise I'm really going to struggle on this holiday as I can't finish a croissant and hot chocolate! Spend the day going around NYNY, Excalibur (Sherwood Cafe for lunch, small french onion soup for me) and have my first ever try at gambling, on 1 cent slot machines. I must say I really don't get the attraction! OH doesn't really do gambling either and we only play/lose $50 in the whole time we're there. Went on the NYNY rollercoaster in the afternoon which was AMAZING!! Weather is ok, but definitely not hot.

In the evening we get the monorail up to the Hilton where we get dinner at the Paradise Cafe (half a BBQ pork hot sandwich for me). This is where I start feeling really ill, but I make it through the Greg London show we got tickets for at tix4tonight that morning. He was very good but I just can't get in to it as I feel so awful. Not totally sure about an 8.30pm show on our second night either, I yawned quite a lot.

Tues 10th: Sleep till a normal time, feel like we've adjusted properly now. Walk up the strip in the morning, brunch in a cafe in Paris, wander round Paris, Bally's, over to Bellagio. Here I start feeling all faint, shaky, so get a taxi back to MGM. I spend the rest of the day in bed, OH goes out on his own.

Weds 11th: Think I'm feeling ok-ish so walk up the other side of the strip via CVS for some meds. Go up as far as Caesar's and do something shopping there. OH has breakfast in Planet Hollywood (restaurant not hotel) and I can only manage a piece of toast. Get my Ugg boots at the Ugg store in Caesars then feeling carp still so walk back, catching the Bellagio fountains at 12pm just. Spend the rest of the day in bed again, OH goes off, maybe to the MGM pool?

Thurs 12th: Feeling awful by now, haven't eaten properly for 2 days and have to spend the whole day in bed. OH gets me gatorade and bread, crisps and cereal bars and tries to make me eat but I just can't do it. Really annoyed with myself as I can't make it out of bed to go to Love that I booked, that I really wanted to see, and OH can't go either as the confirmation to pick up tickets is in my name

Fri 13th: Check-out day, and I manage to get the bell desk to take bags, and check out, while OH goes to pick up the car from PH. We get a Toyota Corolla and there's plenty of room for our 2 big cases and several smaller bags. He's pretty nervous but manages to drive an automatic on the left ok, says it's really easy after a while! We drive to LA with me managing a few crisps on the way, and we stop at Primm (ok shops) and Barstow (better shops) on the way. I think OH has a Calvin Klein addiction. Get a bit lost getting to our hotel in Hollywood but get there about 6pm, having left MGM at 9.30am! Manage a couple of slices of pizza that evening.

Sat 14th: Go up to the walk of fame, do a tour of the stars' homes etc etc, normal touristy things!

Sun 15th: Go to a dodgers baseball game in the afternoon. I totally agree there was no atmosphere! There might have been some in the 9th innings, but most people had left by then! It was fun anyway, even though they lost. If i was just going to Vegas though, I wouldn't make a special trip to see it. I'm eating basically normally again by now thank god.

Mon 16th: Universal studios day - glad we got tickets in advance. Neither me or OH are really in to films so I was a bit worried we'd be bored, but we managed 11-6 there no problem, then had dinner in the citywalk afterwards.

Tues 17th: More shopping. Don't ever trust a map of LA - what you think will be half an hour walking is an hour and a half, as we found out :rotfl:. Eat a really expensive steak house as a treat, Ruth Chris' Steak House - never have I spent nearly £60 a head on a meal before, but it probably was worth it!

Weds 18th: Waste more tourist time up in Hollywood before getting a airport taxi to LAX (really expensive at $65). LAX was tiny really (9 terminals, we were at 'terminal 2' which consisted of about 10 check in desks, a bag drop place, security, then about 6 shops/restaurants for 9 gates. Wish I hadn't turned up 3 hours before the flight! I was much better flying home though, but just couldn't sleep. IFE was better too (v: port), but I actually found the steward(esse)s much less helpful on this flight, running out of food by the time they got to us near the back (OH had to have moroccan style beef and he does NOT do spicy food :(), and not letting you stand around near the toilets/galley as there is no room. Screaming baby for about an hour in the middle of the night aswell.

Thurs 19th: Arrive slightly early at Heathrow and get the railair coach to reading, train home to Bristol, really easy and I fall asleep on the train. Holiday done!

Westin do allow smoking in the casino, but generally not elsewhere. If you want to avoid smoking completely stay in the Vdara, but of course they don't have a casino.
