One thing slightly worries me.....someone mentioned in a post that getting stranded while on an american airline puts them off? Could anyone elaborate on that?

    That was me :)
We got stuck with all the volcanic ash chaos. Basically, if the airline is based in the EU, by EU regulations, they have to pay reasonable food and accommodation expenses. I won't go into too much on the little details. If the airline is not based in the EU (i.e AA), then the EU regulations doesn't cover them, so any expenses for food etc is at the individual airline discretion.
As we flew BA last year, we were able to claim back our expenses. People on other airlines weren't so lucky. I guess the question is are you happy to cover extra expenses for hotels etc if your trip home is delayed/cancelled?

I can say from experience, the cost sure adds up quickly.....

well we are going to disagree on this unless you can come up with any stats on diverts to offload people, lvpd boarding and escorting people off, because if you cannot then I'll still say this flight is not as bad as people on here make out

I don't think it's about anyone justifying their opinion. I think the point is people have expressed views on what they've experienced. You can't ignore the fact that when everyone gives their opinion, based on past experiences, this comes up often. I think that Vegas is a popular destination for stags and hens and that means that some flights may be roudy, regardless of the airline.

I thought the rule was if its an EU airline, or if a non-EU airline was flying into the EU.

That was my understanding too but I do understand certain American carriers needed to be reminded of their responsibilities and did pay up after the event.

Absolutly not, never happen on a BA flight!! Oh wait, I once made a right scene after having a few too many Champers in Club. I had to wait a full 5 minutes for the trolley dolly to come round again to fill my glass that I started pushing the button on the privacy screen to make it go up and down, the wife looked non too pleased with me, and told me to stop making a fool of myself.:o
The common law of business balance prohibits paying a little and getting a lot. If you deal with the lowest bidder, it is well to add something for the risk you run, and if you do that you will have enough to pay for something better.

The insurance covered us for x amount per person, per day for a max of x days. I think we got about £300-£350 total (the maximum). Our insurance company was easy to deal with with and get the money back (Post Office travel), but some did not pay as they classed it as an act of god (or something else to get them out of it), instead of being a weather related cancellation. Bear in mind, everyone got stuck and a lot of hotel prices rocketed as a result of the demand. Finding a cheap last minute hotel isn't as easy as it sounds..... I'm not trying to scare you off, honest! :) It's just something we consider when choosing who to fly with. BA were very good at looking after us. Organised, informative and open about what we could claim back as expenses. Very professional.

I don't know the exacts to be honest. Thankfully BA was covered either way, so we didn't look into any other details. You wouldn't believe how much there was to sort out even after we got home :rotfl:
